Symetra Financial
Symetra Financial is a leading insurance and financial services company dedicated to helping underserved communities achieve financial freedom. As an A-rated carrier with over $40 billion in assets, Symetra specializes in annuities, life insurance, retirement solutions, and employee benefits. Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, Symetra is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Life, one of Japan's top four life insurers managing approximately $300 billion in assets. Through its SEC-registered investment advisory subsidiary, Symetra Investment Management (SIM), the company excels in managing assets for its insurance operations and expanding into U.S. markets. SIM's proven track record underscores Symetra's commitment to in-house expertise and third-party investment services, making it a powerhouse in the financial sector.
The 2026 Commercial Mortgage Loans Internship at Symetra Financial offers a unique opportunity for motivated students to dive into the world of commercial real estate finance. This 12-week fully remote program runs from May 26 to August 14, 2026, allowing interns to work from anywhere in the United States while contributing to meaningful projects within the Commercial Mortgage Loans Department. Interns will receive all necessary equipment shipped directly to their homes, ensuring a seamless virtual experience. A highlight is the possible travel opportunity to Symetra's Bellevue, WA headquarters for a Connect Week in July, fostering networking and collaboration with industry professionals. Ideal for finance, accounting, or real estate majors, this internship provides hands-on exposure to loan servicing, data analysis, and borrower communications in a supportive, remote-first environment.
In this role, interns play a vital part in the commercial mortgage loans process, handling real-world tasks that support Symetra's investment management objectives. Responsibilities include analyzing property operating statements, rent rolls, Net Operating Income (NOI) reports, and property inspections to assess loan performance. Interns will enter financial data accurately into master spreadsheets and the loan servicing records management system, ensuring data integrity. Additional duties involve organizing electronic documents into appropriate loan folders, downloading files from the Loan Portal, saving them correctly, and updating due diligence checklists. Communication is key: interns will interact with mortgage bankers and borrowers via email and telephone to gather and clarify documentation for annual analyses. Other duties as assigned may arise, offering flexibility and growth opportunities.
Each task contributes directly to Symetra's portfolio management, helping maintain the high standards of an A-rated insurer focused on life insurance, retirement planning, and employee benefits.
Symetra seeks self-starters with excellent customer service experience and a positive, can-do attitude. Strong verbal communication skills are essential for effective one-on-one interactions, complemented by writing abilities to clearly convey expectations and actions. Candidates must demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, and superior organizational skills, with the capacity to prioritize and manage multiple transactions independently. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Adobe Acrobat, and Dynamics CRM is required. The ability to accept direction from multiple sources and translate it into action is crucial. As a remote role, applicants must meet Symetra's Remote Network Minimum Requirements: minimum 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload speeds via Fiber, Cable, or DSL (no satellite or cellular). U.S. work authorization is mandatory without sponsorship, and identity verification is part of the secure hiring process.
Symetra prioritizes intern success with a competitive hourly range of $22.00-$25.00, reflecting industry standards in insurance and finance. The fully remote setup includes shipped equipment for comfortable home-based work. Beyond compensation, interns gain invaluable experience in commercial mortgage loans, networking during Connect Week, and mentorship from seasoned professionals. This program aligns with Symetra's mission to empower financial freedom, offering exposure to life insurance, retirement products, and employee benefits administration.
This internship is a launchpad for careers in finance and insurance. Past interns have transitioned into full-time roles at Symetra, leveraging skills in loan analysis and servicing. Symetra's affiliation with Sumitomo Life provides global perspectives, while SIM's expansion opens doors to investment management. Build a resume with real contributions to a $40B+ asset manager, honing skills transferable to banking, real estate finance, or insurtech.
