The Opportunity
The position of Instrument Technician - Lead is within our Infectious Disease Developed Markets business unit located in San Diego, CA.  In this role you will serve as a lead technician supporting the Global Instruments Operations organization.

What You'll Do
• Perform advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and final acceptance testing on medical devices, including cleaning, decontaminating, disassembly, and final assembly, while adhering to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and safety procedures.
• Resolve complex problems by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data with high accuracy and insight.
• Demonstrate financial responsibility by independently approving and reviewing repairs completed by others with a value of up to $2,000.
• Provide technical guidance and support to other technicians.
• Processes, reviews and routes Purchase/Work Orders for approval/review
• Completes test records and work orders according to procedures with accuracy and timeliness.
• Perform routine cleaning, decontamination, and surveillance testing of lab space in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Manage instrumentation repair projects and coordinate with other departments, as required.
• Inspects equipment, standards, parts, and mechanical components for errors, flaws, and certification/calibration status prior to use to ensure proper operation.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and best manufacturing and documentation practices.
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure optimal performance of electronic instruments.
• Lead initiatives to identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency and reduce costs
• Performs assigned training curriculum prior to Due Dates to avoid late training instances.
• Ensures skills and training are adequate to be both compliant and productive with job tasks and confirms performance by soliciting feedback.
• Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems from the product line/process to minimize reject levels and increase throughput
• Leads the effort of preparing documentation regarding Preventive Maintenance and Equipment Operation through effective communication and collaboration with Production Supervisors, Manager and Engineering.
• Sets up and operates all equipment needed to perform assigned tasks.
• Maintains accurate records, manages inventory of spare parts and materials, and provides team members with necessary information to procure replacement parts or special materials required for effective equipment repairs.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree (± 16 years)        ✔    An equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum 6 years experience in high volume production setting
  • Minimum 8 years experience as an electromechanical technician, experience with instrumentation in the medical field.
  • Experience operating in an organization adhering to ISO, FDA, or comparable quality systems and regulations.
  •  Ability to read and understand mechanical, electrical and optical diagrams and technical specifications
  •  Hands-on electro-mechanical repair, rebuild, field service experience.
  •  Technical Certificate as a Electro-Mechanical Technician, Industrial Maintenance Technician or a Technical Degree in Precision Machining and Manufacturing, Automotive Repair, or related technical field.
  • Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and asset management including spare part list development, preventative maintenance, and appropriate SOP’s pertaining to asset acquisition, validation, calibration and retirement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of applicable safety/quality standard and practices required in the manufacture of Abbott products through personal work habits.
  •  Demonstrates the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision for extended periods of time, effectively managing tasks and making informed decisions independently

The base pay for this position is $29.15 – $58.35 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
