Job Description

AECOM is seeking Architectural Interns based in Detroit, MI for the 2026 AECOM Detroit Summer Fellowship.

_This position is expected to begin June 1, 2026, and complete July 31, 2026_

The AECOM Detroit Summer Design Fellowship is an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain much-needed experience in the setting of an architectural practice. This is a highly competitive leadership, professional development, & skill-building opportunity open to current students and recent graduates of interested in pursuing a career in architecture, urban planning, & interior design. The AECOM Detroit Summer Design Fellowship is structured to allow fellows to engage with our community-based partner organizations in a focused effort to develop design solutions to help solve one of their pressing design problems and needs. In addition to developing design skills, fellows will be enabled to volunteer with our partner organization and engage in their fulfilling community-based work. Through this engagement, our fellows will learn the importance of our role in the built environment both in and out of the office. Opportunities to participate in ongoing commercial studio projects will be available.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs a variety of assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out tasks.
  • Performs entry-level work.
  • Follows instructions to accomplish tasks assigned by senior staff.
  • Meets required schedules while producing quality work.
  • Work collaboratively within a project-based team while maintaining individual accountability.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in architecture, Urban Planning, or Interior design and must have completed at least two years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with a master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most recent school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated desire to work with Detroit community-based partner organizations, focused on not-for-profit programs and commercial practice.
  • A demonstrated commitment to community engagement and social impact projects.
  • A portfolio showcasing work that prioritizes people-centered, evidence-based, and/or research-centered design processes.

Additional Information

  • Relocation assistance is available for this position.
  • Sponsorship for US employment authorization is not available for this position now or in the future.
  • Travel / Airfare to and from Detroit at the start and end of the summer will be provided for selected out-of-region Candidates.
  • Summer program housing will be provided for selected out-of-region candidates. Local candidates will not be provided housing.
  • A portfolio of recent work must be submitted.
  • A written statement (150-300words): “ _Why I would like to be an AECOM Detroit Summer Design Fellow”_ must be submitted.
