Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Tunnel Lining Design Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, and optimization of tunnel lining systems for a variety of underground infrastructure projects. This role requires expertise in structural and geotechnical engineering, advanced modeling techniques, and a deep understanding of tunneling methods and materials.

Key Responsibilities

1. Tunnel Lining Design

2. Develop detailed designs for tunnel linings, including segmental linings, shotcrete linings, and cast-in-place concrete linings.

3. Perform structural analysis to ensure the tunnel lining can withstand geotechnical loads, hydrostatic pressures, and operational stresses.

4. Optimize lining designs to achieve cost efficiency, durability, and compliance with project specifications and safety standards.

5. Geotechnical and Structural Analysis

6. Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to assess ground conditions and their impact on tunnel lining design.

7. Conduct numerical modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate soil-structure interaction and assess the performance of lining systems.

8. Evaluate the effects of seismic loads, groundwater pressure, and other external forces on tunnel linings.

9. Material Selection and Specification

10. Select appropriate materials for tunnel linings, considering factors such as durability, load-bearing capacity, and environmental conditions.

11. Specify reinforcement requirements, waterproofing systems, and joint details for tunnel linings.

12. Project Coordination

13. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and contractors, to ensure seamless integration of tunnel lining designs.

14. Participate in design reviews, workshops, and client meetings to present design concepts and address technical queries.

15. Construction Support

16. Provide technical guidance during the construction phase, including reviewing shop drawings, resolving design-related issues, and ensuring compliance with design specifications.

17. Monitor the performance of tunnel linings during construction and recommend adjustments as needed.

18. Quality Assurance and Compliance

19. Ensure that all designs meet relevant codes, standards, and project requirements (e.g., Eurocodes, BS, ASTM, AASHTO, ITA guidelines).

20. Conduct quality checks and peer reviews of design deliverables to maintain high standards of accuracy and reliability.

21. Innovation and Research

22. Stay updated on the latest advancements in tunnel lining materials, methods, and technologies.

23. Develop and implement innovative solutions to improve the performance and efficiency of tunnel lining systems.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree in Structural or Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.

Experience

• 2 years of experience in tunnel design, with a focus on tunnel lining systems.
• Proven experience in designing linings for various tunneling methods, including:
• Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) segmental linings.
• New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) shotcrete linings.
• Cut-and-cover tunnel linings.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in structural and geotechnical analysis software such as PLAXIS, MIDAS GTS, Abaqus, SAP2000, or similar tools.
• Strong understanding of soil-structure interaction, rock mechanics, and hydrogeological considerations.
• Experience with finite element modeling (FEM) for tunnel lining behavior under various loading conditions.
• Knowledge of waterproofing systems, joint design, and durability considerations for tunnel linings.

Certifications

• Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or equivalent certification is highly desirable.
• Membership in professional organizations such as ITA (International Tunneling Association) or ASCE is a plus.

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and technical writing abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
