Job Description

Apple’s RF System Engineering team is seeking a motivated and dedicated expert to define the next generation of Cellular RF Receiver architectures. In this role, you will architect and deliver groundbreaking wireless solutions for future Apple products, working on today's 5G New Radio and groundbreaking the path to 6G. You will have a unique opportunity to develop the core technologies that enable an outstanding wireless experience for millions of customers worldwide. As a key member of our industry-leading team, you will drive the control architecture and algorithms for the RF receiver. You will collaborate with systems engineering, RF circuit design, platform architecture, and software engineering teams to define and implement concepts that deliver uncompromising performance, quality and most efficient implementation.

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of Cellular Radio/3GPP Standards (UMTS, LTE, 5G NR FR1/2, 6G) with a focus on system use cases. (experience)
  • Deep understanding of cellular system use cases and RF/baseband interactions and procedures. (experience)
  • BS with 10 plus years of industry experience. (experience)
  • Expertise in microcontroller architectures used for real time operation and how to program them. (experience)
  • Experience with HW and SW co-design and a clear understanding of trade-offs between digital HW and firmware implementations. (experience)
  • Proven knowledge of radio receiver architectures from antenna to analog/digital base band processing. (experience)
  • Proficiency and practical experience in Python or C++ is crucial. (experience)
  • Experience applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) to improve multi-objective optimization e.g. for RF line-up optimization and definition of adaptive algorithms. (experience)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate optimally in a global, multi-disciplinary team. (experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree with previous work on cellular topics. (degree)
  • 5+ years of shown experience in RF, including cellular receiver architectures. (experience, 5 years)
  • Familiarity with cellular modem architectures. (experience)
  • Knowledge of RF circuit impairments and experience modeling their system-level impact. (experience)
  • Familiarity with RFIC design, layout considerations, and semiconductor processes. (experience)
  • Experience with digital signal processing (DSP). (experience)

Responsibilities

  • As a key member of our industry-leading team, you will drive the control architecture and algorithms for the RF receiver. You will collaborate with systems engineering, RF circuit design, platform architecture, and software engineering teams to define and implement concepts that deliver uncompromising performance, quality and most efficient implementation.
  • Be responsible for the definition and architecture of the control strategy for the RF receiver line-up.
  • Break down 3GPP feature requirements into system requirements and hardware/software partitioning.
  • Define and implement sophisticated system use cases and RF procedures.
  • Develop and integrate RF receiver algorithms (e.g., automatic gain control) and define the supporting control infrastructure, including compute resources, interfaces, memory, and timing constraints.
  • Collaborate with RF circuit design teams to understand timing and configuration requirements.
  • Author detailed specifications and build reference models for firmware and software implementation teams.
  • Contribute to the entire product lifecycle, from initial architectural concept and algorithm definition until silicon validation and mass production.
