Position Summary

Join Sonoco as an Automation Engineer in Chesterfield, UK, and play a pivotal role in optimizing our production processes. This mid-level position offers hands-on involvement in PLC programming, HMI development, and project management across two sites. With a focus on Siemens and Allen Bradley systems, you'll reduce downtime, enhance safety, and drive continuous improvements in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

As our Automation Engineer, you'll provide daily technical support in electrical, mechanical, and automation disciplines. Key duties include configuring Siemens controllers (Simatic Manager, TIA Portal, WinCC Flexible), programming SEW drives and Allen Bradley systems, and developing HMIs. You'll troubleshoot using structured processes, manage bus systems like Profinet and Profibus, and use AutoCAD for documentation. Lead projects, conduct risk assessments, train shift engineers, and collaborate cross-functionally to minimize unplanned downtime and implement savings through improvements.

Performance Metrics

Success is measured by % unplanned downtime reduction, project implementation rates, training completion, and cost savings from continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

We seek candidates with proven experience in automation engineering, including Siemens and Allen Bradley programming, drive technology, and CAD. Proficiency in bus systems (Profinet, Profibus) and robotics is essential.   • Troubleshoot automation issues and perform machine testing on production floor
  • Manage site automation projects at Chesterfield and Bradford sites
  • Train engineers and apprentices, develop operational manuals
  • Identify improvements for safety, efficiency, and waste reduction
  • Liaise with suppliers for hardware/software and maintain system backups
