Lead Level Project Engineer: Part Obsolescence

full-timePosted: Dec 19, 2025

Job Description

Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

The Boeing Global Services (BGS) and the Supply Chain Engineering team is seeking a Lead Level Project Engineer: Part Obsolescence to join our obsolescence management effort in Long Beach, CA.

In this role you will proactively identify, assess, and mitigate part, chemical, and material obsolescence risks that could impact Boeing production and in‑service fleet support. You will work closely with Supply Chain Engineering, Program teams, Design Engineering, BR&T/CMRM, procurement agents, and suppliers to drive upstream identification, develop mitigation strategies (bridge buys, alternates, redesigns), and ensure execution through the operating rhythm.

The ideal candidate brings hands‑on parts experience, strong systems thinking, data-driven prioritization skills, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate across multi‑discipline teams to protect production stability, safety, and program schedule.

Position Responsibilities:

Focus areas (Obsolescence Management)

  • Proactively Identify Obsolescence Risks: Continuously mine supplier forecasts, SCN/CSDT/ELR data, OCMS/OB2 inputs, and other sources to surface part, chemical, and material end-of-life threats that could impact Spares or fleet support.
  • Assess Technical Impact and Risk: Evaluate form, fit, function, safety, and regulatory implications of obsolescence cases and quantify program exposure to prioritize mitigation actions.
  • Develop Mitigation Strategies: Create practical mitigation options (last-time buys, alternate suppliers, licensed manufacturers, part requalification, redesign) and define implementation plans with timelines and success criteria.
  • Manage Execution of Mitigations: Coordinate engineering, procurement, and supplier activities to implement mitigation plans, track progress in the canonical repository (BORIS/OCMS/OB2), and validate closure.
  • Lead Supplier Engagement and Validation: Serve as the engineering point of contact for suppliers—validate supplier submittals, conduct technical assessments, and drive pre coordination to reduce late notifications.
  • Translate Chemical/Regulatory Changes to Part Impact: Collaborate with CMRM and spec custodians to map regulatory material changes to affected parts/SCDs and define required engineering responses.
  • Drive Cross Functional Deep Dives: Facilitate multi discipline investigations for high risk items, convening BR&T/CMRM, structures, systems, flammability, and procurement to converge on solutions.
  • Produce Clear Technical Documentation: Create concise case files, risk assessments, mitigation plans, test plans, RACI matrices, and decision packages to enable reproducible execution and auditability.
  • Integrate into Operating Rhythm: Prepare and present technical recommendations, status updates, and decision packages at daily/weekly/monthly risk boards and program reviews to enable timely leadership decisions.
  • Improve Tools and Automation Opportunities: Identify tooling gaps, capture requirements for OCMS/OB2/Compass integrations, and propose automation to improve triage, reporting, and scalability.
  • Mentor and Knowledge Transfer: Coach PAs, SCEs, MEs, and DEs on obsolescence evaluation techniques, tooling, and best practices to raise organizational capability.
  • Support Continuous Improvement: Track KPIs, analyze root causes of recurring obsolescence events, and lead process improvements to reduce future obsolescence impact on production and customers.
  • Ability to work on site 5 days per week.
  • May be asked to support other programs or perform other duties as needed.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics.
  • 3 + years’ experience of engineering project planning or project management.
  • 3 + years’ experience leading through influence and partnering with cross-functional teams on projects, transactions or initiatives.
  • 3 + years’ experience interacting with business partners and customers.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience working directly with suppliers (supplier audits, assessments, engineering liaison).
  • Knowledge of supply chain processes: SCN, NOC, CSDT, ELR, PRA/RCR.
  • Familiarity with chemical/material regulatory impacts (CMRM), material specifications, and compliance.
  • Prior exposure to risk boards, BORIS or similar risk tracking tools, and use of weighting/prioritization models for triage.
