As a Senior Backend Software Engineer on the Edge - Cloudflare team, you'll be at the forefront of Canva's global infrastructure, ensuring every design request flows seamlessly through our Cloudflare layer. Based in Brisbane or anywhere across ANZ with our hybrid model, you'll design and build core edge platform components like worker frameworks and observability tools, leading reliability and performance initiatives that power Canva's creative magic for millions of users. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement core components of the edge platform, including worker frameworks, infrastructure automation, and observability tooling
  • Lead initiatives to improve system reliability, performance, and security with significant ownership of services or components
  • Collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders to define high-impact solutions, balancing thoroughness and timely delivery
  • Write technical proposals and documentation, presenting solutions clearly to the engineering community
  • Investigate and resolve complex operational incidents, contributing to post-incident learning and prevention
  • Drive improvements to engineering processes and platform health metrics
  • Contribute to the team’s technical strategy and roadmap in alignment with long-term goals
  • Mentor other engineers, provide actionable feedback, and foster a learning-focused culture
  • Optimize developer experience at the edge, enabling efficient operations for Canva's design platform
  • Influence platform direction through architectural thinking and trade-off evaluations

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, and security practices
  • Strong understanding of DNS, Firewall, Security, Load Balancing, CDN, and Edge Computing concepts
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major edge provider such as Cloudflare, Fastly, or Akamai
  • Experience building and managing Cloudflare Workers or similar edge runtime environments
  • Track record of improving operational health, reducing technical debt, and advocating for engineering needs with non-technical stakeholders
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience in distributed systems
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives independently or across teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience contributing to technical strategy and roadmaps in platform teams
  • Mentoring experience with junior engineers in a collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with Canva's technology stack or design-focused platforms
  • Proven success in high-scale, user-facing web services
  • Contributions to open-source projects in edge computing or infrastructure
