Based in our hybrid model across Australia (with hubs in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, and more), you'll design core components like worker frameworks and observability tools, lead reliability initiatives, and collaborate with teams to deliver high-impact solutions. In this role, you'll take ownership of services, resolve complex incidents, mentor engineers, and shape our technical roadmap—all while thriving in our collaborative, learning-focused environment. With proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, Cloudflare Workers, edge computing, and tools like Terraform, you'll optimize performance, reduce tech debt, and advocate for engineering excellence. We're looking for a proactive problem-solver who communicates effectively across audiences, evaluates trade-offs thoughtfully, and biases toward action to empower Canva's product platform. You'll join the specialised Edge team within our Product Platform Group, enabling efficient engineering at the edge while fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and growth. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement core components of the edge platform, including worker frameworks, infrastructure automation, and observability tooling
  • Lead initiatives to improve system reliability, performance, and security with significant ownership of services or components
  • Collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders to define high-impact solutions, balancing thoroughness and timely delivery
  • Write technical proposals and documentation, presenting solutions clearly to the engineering community
  • Investigate and resolve complex operational incidents, contributing to post-incident learning and prevention
  • Drive improvements to engineering processes and platform health metrics
  • Contribute to the team’s technical strategy and roadmap in alignment with Canva's long-term goals
  • Mentor other engineers, provide actionable feedback, and help build a learning-focused culture
  • Enhance developer experience at the edge, influencing platform direction through architectural thinking
  • Optimize performance and operational health while sharing knowledge across teams

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and security practices
  • Strong understanding of DNS, Firewall, Security, Load Balancing, CDN, and Edge Computing concepts
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major edge provider such as Cloudflare, Fastly, or Akamai
  • Experience building and managing Cloudflare Workers or similar edge runtime environments
  • Track record of improving operational health, reducing technical debt, and advocating for engineering needs with non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives independently or across teams with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Experience in hybrid work environments with a focus on collaboration across ANZ timezones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience contributing to technical strategy and roadmaps in fast-scaling platforms
