About the Role

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design at Canva. As a Senior Backend Software Engineer on the Edge - Cloudflare team, you'll be at the frontline of Canva's web services, managing our Cloudflare layer that every user request passes through. Part of the specialised Edge team within the Product Platform Group, you'll ensure Canva remains secure, performant, and reliable for millions of creative users worldwide. This hybrid role, open across ANZ with bases in Melbourne, Sydney, and beyond, empowers you to shape our edge platform while thriving in Canva's innovative, collaborative culture. You'll design and implement core edge components like worker frameworks and observability tools, lead reliability and security initiatives, and collaborate across teams to deliver high-impact solutions. With ownership of critical services, you'll investigate incidents, drive process improvements, contribute to technical strategy, and mentor engineers in a learning-focused environment. Your work will optimise developer experience, reduce tech debt, and enable Canva's design magic to scale globally through cutting-edge edge computing. We're looking for a proactive engineer proficient in JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Terraform, and edge technologies like Cloudflare Workers, with hands-on experience in DNS, CDN, and security. Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement core components of the edge platform, including worker frameworks, infrastructure automation, and observability tooling
• Lead initiatives to improve system reliability, performance, and security with significant ownership of services or components
• Collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders to define high-impact solutions, balancing thoroughness and timely delivery
• Write technical proposals and documentation, presenting solutions clearly to the engineering community
• Investigate and resolve complex operational incidents, contributing to post-incident learning and prevention
• Drive improvements to engineering processes and platform health metrics
• Contribute to the team’s technical strategy and roadmap in alignment with long-term goals
• Mentor other engineers, provide actionable feedback, and foster a learning-focused culture
• Optimize developer experience at the edge, influencing platform direction and architecture
• Enhance Canva's Cloudflare layer to ensure secure, dependable web services for millions of users

Required Qualifications

• Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and security practices
• Strong understanding of DNS, Firewall, Security, Load Balancing, CDN, and Edge Computing concepts
• Hands-on experience with at least one major edge provider such as Cloudflare, Fastly, or Akamai
• Experience building and managing Cloudflare Workers or similar edge runtime environments
• Track record of improving operational health, reducing technical debt, and advocating for engineering needs with non-technical stakeholders
• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience in distributed systems
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives independently or across teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with infrastructure automation and developer platform tooling
• Background in high-scale web services or content delivery networks
• Mentoring experience in engineering teams
• Familiarity with Canva's tech stack or design-focused platforms
• Contributions to open-source edge computing projects
