As a Senior Backend Software Engineer - Edge - Cloudflare, you'll own critical components of our global edge platform, ensuring Canva remains lightning-fast, ultra-secure, and always available for millions of users worldwide. This role, open across ANZ with a hybrid model from our Sydney flagship campus or other locations, offers you the autonomy to shape platform direction while collaborating in our innovative, design-obsessed culture. You'll design and implement core edge platform components like worker frameworks and observability tooling, lead reliability and performance initiatives, and resolve complex incidents that impact our global user base. Expect to collaborate across Product Platform Group teams, write compelling technical proposals, and mentor engineers to foster a learning-focused environment. With hands-on experience in Cloudflare Workers and edge providers essential, you'll bring architectural depth to optimize Canva's infrastructure, reduce tech debt, and enhance developer productivity—directly enabling our creative teams to ship magical design experiences faster. Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement core components of Canva's edge platform, including worker frameworks, infrastructure automation, and observability tooling
• Lead initiatives to improve system reliability, performance, and security with significant ownership of services or components
• Collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders to define high-impact solutions, balancing thoroughness and timely delivery
• Write technical proposals and documentation, presenting solutions clearly to the engineering community
• Investigate and resolve complex operational incidents, contributing to post-incident learning and prevention
• Drive improvements to engineering processes and platform health metrics
• Contribute to the team's technical strategy and roadmap in alignment with Canva's long-term goals
• Mentor other engineers, provide actionable feedback, and help build a learning-focused culture
• Enhance developer experience at the edge, enabling Canva engineers to build innovative design features efficiently
• Optimize Canva's Cloudflare layer to ensure every user request is secure, fast, and reliable

Required Qualifications

• Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and security practices
• Strong understanding of DNS, Firewall, Security, Load Balancing, CDN, and Edge Computing concepts
• Hands-on experience with at least one major edge provider such as Cloudflare, Fastly, or Akamai
• Experience building and managing Cloudflare Workers or similar edge runtime environments
• Proven track record of improving operational health, reducing technical debt, and advocating for engineering needs with non-technical stakeholders
• Excellent problem-solving skills with experience delivering impactful projects independently or across teams
• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience in scalable, high-traffic systems

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in design-focused or creative technology companies
• Background in mentoring junior engineers and building learning-focused cultures
• Familiarity with Canva's technology stack or similar design platform architectures
• Experience contributing to technical strategy and roadmaps in platform teams
• Knowledge of performance optimization at global scale
