Job Description

Job ID: 1449188

Meet the Team
Outshift by Cisco is the emerging tech incubation group that explores, identifies, and creates new businesses for Cisco. We are passionate about being at the cutting edge of technology, taking Cisco into new markets and building exciting products that solve tomorrow’s biggest challenges.
Like a startup, we take an entrepreneurial approach to success. We incubate ideas into products that solve critical needs, then deliver an experience that delights users and customers from MVP to full-blown commercial offering.
Outshift is about innovation. We look from 12 months out to five years into the future, flexibly working to solve problems instead of fitting into a defined job description. We celebrate learning, and expect our teams to fail fast, challenging assumptions and finding new ways of solving problems.
Outshifters enjoy gaining experience across a breadth of technological and business challenges and can expect to shift across products/problems and build new skills regularly.
We’re building the next wave of startup-like innovation with the support of a trusted name like Cisco. Where else will you get to do this? Come create with us.

Your Impact
The Outshift team is highly visible within Cisco as it's leading the future innovation for the business. As part of the Cisco Corporate Strategy, Development and Incubation group, you will be working with some of the organization’s most forward thinkers.
We are seeking a Software Engineer who is driven by curiosity and thrives in a dynamic, ever-changing environment at the forefront of technology. You approach software development with a technology-agnostic mindset, viewing programming languages and software stacks as tools to craft innovative solutions. Your adaptability and problem-solving skills enable you to implement effective solutions across diverse technologies.

Minimum Qualifications
• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, including ownership of major system components or services.
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
• Proven experience designing and delivering cloud-native, distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in at least one modern programming language (e.g. Go, Python, JavaScript/Node.js, Java, C#, C++, or Rust).
• Hands-on familiarity with modern development and deployment practices — containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, APIs, and microservices.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, make architectural decisions, and guide others through complex challenges.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience leading projects or technical teams in a cross-functional, agile environment.
• Experience collaborating across multiple engineering teams or product areas.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
• Background in any of these areas is a plus: cybersecurity, observability, networking, machine learning, or generative AI.
• History of mentoring engineers, contributing to open source, or improving engineering practices.
• Strong communication skills — able to translate technical topics to diverse audiences and document decisions clearly.
• Growth mindset: you challenge assumptions, raise technical standards, and create an environment where others succeed.

Why Cisco?

At Cisco, we’re revolutionizing how data and infrastructure connect and protect organizations in the AI era – and beyond. We’ve been innovating fearlessly for 40 years to create solutions that power how humans and technology work together across the physical and digital worlds. These solutions provide customers with unparalleled security, visibility, and insights across the entire digital footprint.

Fueled by the depth and breadth of our technology, we experiment and create meaningful solutions. Add to that our worldwide network of doers and experts, and you’ll see that the opportunities to grow and build are limitless. We work as a team, collaborating with empathy to make really big things happen on a global scale. Because our solutions are everywhere, our impact is everywhere.

We are Cisco, and our power starts with you.
