Job Description

Job Role: Data Center Engineer with Windows Server Administration

Job Location: Hybrid- Chicago, IL

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Datacenter Engineer to manage, maintain, and optimize our on-premises and virtualized infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Windows Server administration, VMware virtualization, enterprise networking, and storage systems. This role is critical to ensuring high availability, performance, and security across all datacenter operations.

In this role, you will

  • Server & Virtualization Management

Administer and maintain Windows Server environments (2016/2019/2022), including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.

Deploy, configure, and support VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi hosts.

Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and patch management for virtual and physical servers.

  • Network Infrastructure:

Manage and troubleshoot datacenter network components including switches, routers, VLANs, and firewalls.

Ensure optimal network performance and security across all layers.

  • Storage & Backup:

Configure and maintain SAN/NAS storage systems, including provisioning and LUN management.

Implement and monitor backup and disaster recovery strategies using tools like Veeam or Commvault.

  • Hardware Maintenance:

Maintain datacenter hardware including rack servers, storage arrays, UPS systems, and other critical infrastructure.

  • Security & Compliance:

Ensure compliance with internal and external security standards.

Participate in audits, maintain documentation, and support remediation efforts.

  • Collaboration & Support:

Work with cross-functional teams to support new deployments, upgrades, and infrastructure projects.

Provide on-call support and participate in scheduled maintenance windows.

What you’ll need to succeed (required skills)

  • 8–10 years of experience in datacenter operations or system administration.

  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022).

  • Expertise in VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi.

  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, subnets, routing, and firewalls.

  • Hands-on experience with SAN/NAS, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel storage technologies.

  • Familiarity with backup solutions such as Veeam or Commvault.

  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automation and task optimization.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.

Preferred skills: what will help you stand out

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server or Azure Administrator

  • CompTIA Network+ / Security+

  • Cisco CCNA or equivalent networking certification

Salary and Other Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between $75,000 to $90,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
