Job Description

At Cognizant, we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible, and we are here to support a healthy work-life balance though our various wellbeing programs. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is an onsite position requiring 5 days a week in a Client’s facility in Chicago, IL.

As a Patient Advocate you will make an impact by helping patients navigate the healthcare system. The Patient Advocate coordinates directly with patients in a hospital setting to provide support and communicate with agencies, hospital staff, and others to advocate on behalf of self-pay patients and other underinsured patients, verify eligibility for Medicaid or other federal programs.

Location: Chicago, IL

Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Onsite

In this role, you will:

  • Assist patients and others to complete forms, applications, and other paperwork.

  • Collect and review patient information to determine patient’s eligibility.

  • Prepare documents, review for accuracy and completeness.

  • Provide technical assistance on agency issues, services, and programs.

  • Maintain and/or create files or record keeping systems. Sort, label files, and retrieve documents or other materials.

  • Interact with patients at the site to provide real-time service support and address patient concerns.

  • Develop and retain professional relationships with hospital staff.

  • Handle caseload, retrieve, sustain, and communicate all designated reports.

  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to EMTALA and HIPAA guidelines.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you need to have to be considered:

  • High School or GED required; associate degree or equivalent from 2-year college a plus.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced diverse environment

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills to interact with patients and hospital staff.

  • Ability to travel locally to other work sites.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel pivot tables, Project, and PowerPoint)

Preferred:

  • 1+ year of work experience in health care, medical insurance, hospital, or clinic

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare processes.

Salary and Other Compensation:

The hourly rate for this position is between $20.00 – $22.00 per hour, depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
