  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Able Bodied Seaman (AB) endorsement. (experience)
  • Valid Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) endorsements, including Basic Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, and Advanced Fire Fighting. (experience)
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). (experience)
  • US Coast Guard (USCG) Medical Certificate. (experience)
  • Experience in deck operations and maintenance on tankers or similar vessels. (experience)
  • Familiarity with cargo handling procedures and safety regulations for oil transport. (experience)
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces. (experience)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills. (experience)
  • Knowledge of navigation rules and procedures. (experience)
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions from the Chief Mate and Master. (experience)
  • Willingness to work a rotating schedule, including long hours and weekends. (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in docking and undocking procedures, including handling mooring lines and securing the ship.
  • Stand watch as lookout or on the bridge, steering the vessel under the direction of the bridge team.
  • Perform deck-related maintenance duties under the supervision of the Boatswain, including cleaning, painting, and repairs.
  • Assist with the loading and discharging of cargo, including connecting and disconnecting hoses, operating valves, and monitoring tank levels.
  • Work aloft in certain situations to perform maintenance or repairs on masts, antennas, or other equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain safety equipment, including lifeboats, fire extinguishers, and personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in drills and emergency response activities, including fire drills, abandon ship drills, and oil spill response exercises.
  • Enforce rules, procedures, regulations, and pollution prevention measures.
  • Monitor and maintain cargo systems, ensuring proper operation and preventing leaks or spills.
  • Assist with navigation, using charts, GPS, and other navigational tools.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment on deck and in living quarters.
  • Communicate effectively with other crew members and shore-based personnel.
  • Load ballast and use a tape to gauge tanks.
  • Tend mooring lines as needed to keep the ship against the berth.
  • Assist in crane operations for cargo hoses and taking on vessel stores.
  • Operate manual valves and/or checking mechanical valves for accurate operation.
  • Bleed lines at the chicksan and removing/attaching blanks.
  • Take lines from the tugboat, throwing heaving lines to the dock, pulling back the messenger lines, attaching messenger lines to mooring lines and assisting in slacking the mooring lines.
  • Pull in and securing mooring lines and assisting in handling the tug lines.
