Position Summary
The Controls Engineer at Sonoco's Richmond Paper Mill plays a pivotal role in maintaining, upgrading, and optimizing control and automation systems. Collaborating with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams, you'll enhance safety, reliability, and productivity. Responsibilities include day-to-day technical support, strategic modernization plans, and leading control system projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as project lead for automation initiatives, managing scope, budget, and schedules.
- Troubleshoot using loop sheets and electrical diagrams; create them in AutoCAD for small projects.
- Tune control loops, audit performance with X,Y plots, and optimize with process engineers.
- Develop comprehensive documentation for bidding, installation, and maintenance.
- Provide commissioning support, train maintenance teams, and direct work orders.
- Maintain a project funnel for ongoing upgrades and troubleshoot during upsets.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (or Associate's in Electrical Engineering with experience).
- PLC programming expertise (ladder logic, structured text; Rockwell, Siemens preferred).
- Experience with AC/DC drives (Yaskawa, Siemens, Rockwell), HMI, DCS (ABB, Foxboro, Schneider), and networks.
- AutoCAD proficiency for diagrams; strong communication and teamwork skills.
