As an Employment Counsel at Coursera, you will be a vital part of the Legal and Compliance team. This team manages all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. You will specifically support the Employment & Litigation sub-team, reporting to the Director and Associate General Counsel of Employment and Litigation.
In this role, you will collaborate with internal stakeholders, external legal advisors, and HR professionals to provide legal advice and manage employment-related risks. You will handle a broad spectrum of employment law matters while ensuring compliance with local laws, regulations, and best practices across multiple jurisdictions in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. We seek someone passionate about education, fostering business growth, and someone highly motivated and detail-oriented.
We seek an individual with a strong background in UK employment law and employment counseling, with experience counseling on international matters across EMEA. The ideal candidate can adapt and apply their legal knowledge and skills to new situations and issues, operate with minimal supervision, and be a team player who brings a positive, “can-do” attitude to the workplace.
Imagine starting your day by reviewing new employment legislation in the UK and its potential impact on Coursera’s policies. You then collaborate with the HR team to update employee handbooks and ensure compliance.
Next, you advise a manager on a complex employee relations issue, providing guidance on performance management and disciplinary procedures. You draft a termination agreement, ensuring it complies with all legal requirements.
In the afternoon, you participate in a meeting with external legal counsel to discuss an ongoing employment tribunal case. You review the case strategy and provide input on potential settlement options.
Finally, you conduct a training session for managers on employment law best practices, covering topics such as discrimination, harassment, and fair hiring practices.
