As a Design Engineer reporting to the Associate Director - Technology, you'll drive impactful equipment development, process improvements, and product innovations. Utilize CAD modeling, prototyping, and trials in our development facility while collaborating with engineers and professionals. This role demands initiative, inventiveness, and independent judgment in a dynamic, innovation-focused environment.
Key duties include defining design criteria based on user needs, optimizing designs through iterations and prototypes, collaborating in team settings, selecting efficient fabrication methods for optimal performance-to-cost ratios, working with suppliers on specialized equipment, coordinating project phases including installation and debugging (with infrequent domestic/international travel and weekend work), directing designers/technicians, managing budgets/schedules, ensuring vendor compliance, suggesting product/process improvements, and leading capital projects to enhance Sonoco's competitiveness.
We seek candidates with a BSME or Master's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, proficiency in CAD (Autodesk Inventor preferred), and 5+ years of relevant experience. Ideal candidates excel in communication, mentoring, root-cause analysis, creative problem-solving, adaptability, patience through design iterations, time management, and thriving in innovative teams. Knowledge of AC motors, PLCs, electronics, and controls is a plus. Be curious, open to new concepts, and focused on high-impact priorities.
