As Director of Engineering, you'll report directly to the VP of Engineering and play a pivotal role in shaping Discord's commerce strategy. You'll manage teams building the infrastructure that enables game developers to manage shop queues, process in-game purchases, and create seamless connected experiences on Discord. Key Responsibilities

• Build, hire, and lead multiple engineering teams specializing in commerce platform development and in-Discord player experiences, fostering a culture of ownership and high impact.
• Define and drive the commerce platform strategy from inception, organizing teams to support shop queue management, purchase flows, and developer monetization tools.
• Partner closely with major game publishers and large developers to understand their lifecycle needs and build platform features that deliver mutual value.
• Collaborate with Product leadership to articulate vision, culture, and roadmaps for your teams while aligning with company-wide executives.
• Leverage your technical depth to guide architecture decisions, ensuring high-performance systems capable of handling Discord's massive scale.
• Mentor and coach engineering managers and individual contributors, growing senior leaders within the organization.
• Work cross-functionally with other Engineering leaders to elevate Discord's engineering practices and workplace philosophy.
• Drive adoption of Discord's Social SDK and connected gaming experiences among thousands of game titles.
• Identify and implement pragmatic solutions to complex problems using first-principles thinking.
• Engage in high-level technical discussions with game company CTOs and technical directors.
• Build infrastructure for seamless commerce integration, microtransactions, and web shops tailored to gaming ecosystems.
• Continuously iterate on player experiences to make Discord the go-to platform for all gamers.
• Measure and optimize team performance against key metrics like developer adoption, transaction volume, and platform reliability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years as a Software Engineer with a rock-solid technical foundation in scalable systems.
• 5+ years in Engineering Management, successfully leading 3+ Engineering Managers and 15+ Software Engineers.
• 2+ years of experience managing managers, demonstrating ability to scale leadership structures.
• Proven track record of hiring, developing, and retaining senior engineering leaders.
• Hands-on technical chops to participate in architecture reviews and converse fluently with game industry technical directors.
• Deep empathy for developers, with direct experience building products or platforms targeted at developer audiences.
• Strong passion for coaching, mentoring, and unlocking potential in engineering teams.
• Pragmatic problem-solver who applies first-principles thinking to real-world challenges.
• Experience collaborating with product, design, and executive stakeholders.
• Bonus: Gaming industry background with AAA publishers, platform providers, or studios.
• Bonus: Built commerce platforms, microtransaction systems, or web shops at scale.

Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $280,000 - $420,000 USD per year, plus equity. Discord offers industry-leading compensation packages tailored to experience and location.
