Discord powers 1.5 billion hours of gaming monthly across thousands of titles. Our Product Policy team, including Safety Policy, ensures millions can play, talk, and connect safely. As Director, Safety Policy, you'll lead the team crafting Community Guidelines, recommendations policies, and frameworks for consumer products. This isn't traditional policy work—it's innovative, using LLMs to test and iterate policies at massive scale.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Product Policy, you'll partner with Trust & Safety, Engineering, Legal, and Product teams. Navigate evolving global regulations while keeping policies pragmatic for Discord's unique gaming audience. Key Responsibilities

1. Lead Policy Development: Own Discord's core safety policies, including Community Guidelines tailored for gamers.
2. Innovate with AI/ML: Harness LLMs to rapidly prototype, test, and refine policy language and enforcement.
3. Team Leadership: Build and mentor a high-impact team of policy experts passionate about platform integrity.
4. Operations Bridge: Collaborate on enforcement SOPs, training, and feedback loops with Trust & Safety.
5. Regulatory Navigation: Translate global laws into actionable policies that work for Discord's scale.
6. Cross-Functional Partnership: Work with Eng, Legal, and Product to implement policies seamlessly.
7. Scale Policy Frameworks: Develop systems handling millions of daily interactions in gaming servers.
8. Monitor Emerging Risks: Proactively address new harms like AI-generated content or deepfakes.
9. Culture Preservation: Ensure policies reflect Discord's friend-focused, gaming-centric identity.
10. Performance Reporting: Track policy efficacy and team metrics for senior leadership.
11. Innovation Experiments: Pioneer AI-human hybrid workflows for policy evolution.
12. Stakeholder Engagement: Advocate for policies internally and with regulators externally.
13. Training Development: Create materials empowering global moderation teams.
14. Feedback Integration: Use operational data to continuously iterate policies.

Qualifications

To excel as Discord's Director, Safety Policy, you need:

• 10+ years in policy, with 5+ in tech/gaming user safety.
• Proven leadership of policy teams delivering at scale.
• Expertise in AI/ML applications for content policy (LLMs a plus).
• Deep knowledge of global regs (DSA, COPPA, GDPR).
• Experience partnering with ops, eng, and legal for enforcement.
• Advanced degree in Law, Policy, or equivalent experience.
• Passion for gaming and understanding of Discord's community.
• Analytical skills to measure policy impact quantitatively.
• Empathy for diverse user needs in global gaming ecosystems.
• Track record innovating under regulatory pressure.
• Excellent written/verbal communication for complex topics.

Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $250,000 - $375,000 USD yearly, based on experience, plus equity and bonuses. Total compensation often exceeds $500K for top performers.
