Role Overview

The Engineering Manager, Engagement position is a hands-on leadership role reporting directly to the Director of Engineering for Core Product. You'll lead a small, high-impact team of full stack engineers responsible for building the foundational features that make Discord delightful. From enhancing voice chat during gaming sessions to improving friend discovery and community interactions, your work will touch every Discord user.

This isn't traditional management - expect to roll up your sleeves and code alongside your team, dive into data analysis, and drive product decisions. With 90%+ of Discord users being gamers, you'll play a pivotal role in making social gaming more accessible and fun across web, mobile, and desktop platforms.

Discord's Engagement team focuses on metrics that matter: daily active users, session length, friend connections, and community growth. Your leadership will directly influence these KPIs while maintaining the high technical standards that Discord users expect.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional collaboration with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, UX Researchers, and Marketing to define and execute the team roadmap
• Make principled resourcing decisions balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term technical health
• Partner with org leadership on strategic planning and engineering org improvements
• Drive product decisions with clear focus on engagement metrics and user delight
• Use deep technical expertise to guide architectural decisions and technical tradeoffs
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, 1:1s, and career development planning
• Get hands-on with code, data analysis, and prototyping to maintain technical credibility
• Champion Discord's workplace philosophy of small teams with big ownership
• Analyze user behavior data to inform feature prioritization and iteration
• Build scalable foundations supporting 200M+ monthly active users
• Foster inclusive team culture focused on growth and results
• Represent engineering in executive product reviews and planning
• Continuously improve team velocity while maintaining quality bar

Qualifications

Must-Have Requirements:

• Active Discord power user who intuitively understands platform flows
• 5+ years full stack engineering experience across mobile/web/backend
• 2+ years Engineering Manager experience leading 5+ engineer teams
• Proven product sense and customer obsession
• Metrics-driven background in growth-focused product teams

Ideal Background:

• Social/messaging consumer product experience
• React Native or mobile framework expertise
• Gaming industry passion and understanding
• Experience scaling features to 100M+ user base

Discord seeks leaders who combine technical depth with people management excellence. You should be as comfortable debugging React Native crashes as you are running quarterly business reviews.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation: $248,000 - $279,000 base salary + equity + comprehensive benefits. Total compensation places this role in the top tier for Engineering Managers in San Francisco.
