Director, Software Engineering

Location: Bengaluru, India

Department: Engineering

Work Mode: Hybrid

About the Role

Docusign brings agreements to life. Over 1.5 million customers and more than a billion people in over 180 countries use Docusign solutions to accelerate business processes and simplify lives through intelligent agreement management, e-signature, and contract lifecycle management (CLM). As the #1 company in these spaces, we unleash business-critical data trapped in documents, connecting it to systems of record to save time, money, and opportunity. Join our innovation-driven culture where trust, equality, and impact empower you to make the world more agreeable. We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering to lead our Developer Productivity and Experiences (DevEx) team in Bangalore. In this people-manager role reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, you will oversee a team of engineers designing, implementing, and optimizing core developer experiences to maximize productivity across all of engineering. Your team will pave the path for world-class DevEx, collaborating with global teams to resolve pain points, elevate workflows, and ensure seamless code changes through the release cycle in support of our high-scale e-signature and agreement platforms. As the senior on-site leader for local Cloud & Production Engineering teams, you will build and maintain top performance while bridging time zones for crisp US handoffs. Key responsibilities include defining DevEx strategy with metrics like MTTR and change failure rate, enhancing CI/CD tooling for trunk-based workflows and security gates, building observability with SLOs and dashboards, owning reliability and cost efficiency, establishing standards and enablement programs, and fostering an inclusive culture of craftsmanship. This hybrid role (minimum 2 days/week in-office) demands a leader passionate about developer velocity in a global SaaS environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the Developer Experience (DevEx) strategy by establishing goals, roadmaps, and success metrics such as MTTR, merge-to-deploy time, build/test cycle time, and change failure rate
  • Improve tooling for code review, branching, trunk-based workflows, automated quality gates, and security/compliance checks throughout the SDLC to support DocuSign's intelligent agreement management platform
  • Build robust observability for the developer journey, including telemetry, dashboards, SLA/SLOs, feedback loops, and transparent KPIs to maximize engineering productivity
  • Drive safe change management, incident response, reliability, capacity planning, and cost efficiency for build/test/release systems at scale
  • Establish engineering standards, documentation, and enablement programs including training, office hours, and inner-source contributions to foster innovation in e-signature solutions
  • Provide clear expectations, coaching, and career growth pathways while attracting, hiring, and retaining top talent aligned to business priorities
  • Foster an inclusive, high-accountability culture centered on impact, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement within the Cloud & Production Engineering organization
  • Act as the senior on-site leader in Bangalore, representing the group locally, driving engagement, coordinating cross-functional work, and ensuring operational excellence
  • Bridge time zones effectively with US counterparts to enable crisp handoffs, decision velocity, and collaboration across global teams
  • Work closely with engineering teams company-wide to identify pain points, elevate developer experiences, and shepherd code changes through the release cycle for world-class productivity

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of combined software development and management experience across at least 3 different programming languages
  • 10+ years of hands-on software development as an individual contributor
  • Demonstrated ownership of developer productivity, dev tooling, CI/CD, build/test infrastructure, or internal platforms at meaningful scale
  • Proven record of delivering measurable velocity and reliability improvements backed by data and clear KPIs/OKRs
  • Strong systems thinking with hands-on familiarity in CI/CD platforms (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins), artifact repos, release orchestration, source control workflows at scale, test strategies, observability (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana), and cloud/container foundations (Kubernetes, Terraform)
  • Experience leading India-based engineering teams in a global organization with US reporting lines
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills across time zones, with ability to influence senior leaders and align diverse teams
  • Expertise in C#, React, and Python, with hands-on depth in stacks like .NET, Java, Node/Python and modern build systems
  • Familiarity with secure SDLC, policy-as-code, governance (secrets management, SBOM, supply-chain security), and cost/performance optimization for build/test fleets
  • Experience driving innovation in developer experiences for high-scale SaaS platforms like e-signature and intelligent agreement management systems

Required Skills
