The Legal Counsel, Data Governance & Marketing Compliance is a highly qualified, team-oriented, data-first attorney with a holistic mindset and deep expertise in data governance, privacy laws (GDPR, CPRA/CCPA), global data protection, and marketing regulations. This cross-functional role provides legal support and practical guidance on global projects impacting data governance, privacy, and marketing in our fast-paced SaaS environment. You will collaborate closely with InfoSec, Product & Engineering, Marketing, and Product Legal teams to implement best practices across the data lifecycle, balancing legal risks with strategic objectives in intelligent agreement management and e-signature innovation. Success requires substantial SaaS experience scaling contract processes and compliance for customers, partners, and vendors. Partnering with product counsel, you will advise engineering and marketing on ethical data use and strong governance. We seek an adaptable high-performer who embraces AI, operates with integrity, and thrives amid change and ambiguity. This individual contributor role reports to the Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, Data Governance & Privacy, and is designated as Remote. Key responsibilities include advising on data governance compliance, reviewing marketing content, negotiating contracts, developing policies, and monitoring regulatory developments to support DocuSign's global initiatives. Bring your 'get it done' attitude to foster compliance while enabling innovation in our e-signature and CLM platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and practical guidance on data governance across DocuSign teams (Product, Engineering, Marketing, IT, InfoSec) to ensure compliance with global privacy laws like GDPR and CPRA
  • Guide implementation of data governance best practices, draft company policies, and advise on consent management, data use, and protection
  • Offer timely counsel on privacy, AI, and data protection issues, balancing legal risks with DocuSign's intelligent agreement management objectives
  • Support cross-functional initiatives to enhance product and organizational data governance, promoting ethical data use to mitigate legal, operational, and reputational risks
  • Ensure compliance with advertising, marketing, and promotional laws including FTC, TCPA, CAN-SPAM, and applicable privacy regulations
  • Review and approve marketing materials, content, and campaigns for legal compliance, leveraging AI tools for efficiency
  • Draft, review, and negotiate marketing-related contracts such as agency agreements, talent releases, and content licenses
  • Develop and maintain marketing compliance policies, guidelines, training materials, and provide counseling to sales, marketing, and global business units
  • Provide sales lead generation and development privacy counseling, integrating with DocuSign's e-signature and CLM platforms
  • Research and monitor evolving legal developments in data privacy, advertising, and marketing laws relevant to SaaS innovation
  • Collaborate with Product Legal, Engineering, and Marketing teams to support scalable regulatory compliance in intelligent agreement management

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of legal counseling experience in privacy, data governance, and marketing compliance areas, with a focus on SaaS environments
  • Prior law firm or in-house experience providing practical guidance on operational matters related to data governance and privacy
  • Experience with best practices in data governance, marketing compliance, and privacy laws including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and global data protection regulations
  • Admitted to and in good standing with a state bar or equivalent certification
  • Demonstrated experience advising on marketing-related laws such as FTC regulations, TCPA, CAN-SPAM Act, and consumer protection standards
  • Substantial SaaS technology experience supporting contract drafting, negotiation, and regulatory compliance for customers, partners, and vendors
  • Familiarity with tools including DocuSign, Salesforce, Google Docs, OneTrust, JIRA, and Confluence
