Role Overview

Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services & Systems division, a leader in sustainable power management, is seeking a Lead Power Distribution Controls Engineer to join our Power Systems Controls (PSC) team in Houston, Texas. This remote role, with up to 20% travel and a company-provided vehicle, involves leading the design, programming, installation, startup, maintenance, and optimization of advanced automated control and power management systems. You will deliver innovative solutions for critical infrastructure, integrating technologies from major manufacturers of HMIs, PLCs, protective relays, and switchgear controls, while upholding Eaton’s commitment to ethical business practices and environmental sustainability. As a technical leader, you will create and deploy software for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), data concentrators, multi-function protection relays, generator controllers, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) tailored to automatic power transfer applications such as Main-Tie-Main, Main-Gen, Main-Tie-Main-Gen, and Generator Paralleling Switchgear. Your expertise will extend to Microgrid control solutions featuring Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and Diesel/Natural gas generators, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance for resilient, energy-efficient power distribution. You will collaborate closely with customers and cross-functional teams, following specifications to select components, develop bills of materials, provide design direction to electrical drafters, and prepare submittals, Sequences of Operation (SOO), and test procedures. Hands-on involvement in factory testing, field startups, and troubleshooting will be key, as you drive projects from concept to commissioning while prioritizing safety, reliability, and Eaton’s sustainability goals like reducing carbon footprints through intelligent power management. This position demands a deep understanding of power monitoring protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850) and best practices in automation and protection relay systems. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation, modification, testing, and deployment of software for PLCs, data concentrators, multi-function protection relays, generator controllers, and HMIs for automatic power transfer applications (Main-Tie-Main, Main-Gen, Main-Tie-Main-Gen, Generator Paralleling Switchgear)
  • Develop Microgrid control solutions integrating Solar Photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and Diesel/Natural gas generators
  • Follow customer specifications and internal Eaton standards for project implementation to ensure reliability and efficiency
  • Select components and create detailed bills of materials optimized for power management and sustainability
  • Provide sketches, mark-ups, and direction to Electrical Designers for developing accurate project drawings
  • Prepare comprehensive customer submittals, Sequence of Operation (SOO), and test procedures
  • Assist with factory testing, field start-ups, and system optimization as required
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in non-functioning power distribution control systems

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution with minimum 7 years of controls experience in power distribution applications
  • Master's degree in Engineering with at least 5 years of controls experience in power distribution applications
  • Minimum 10 years of controls experience in power distribution applications
  • Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license
  • Available for up to 20% travel
  • Successfully complete and maintain compliance with Eaton’s safety program and Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program
  • Ability to submit to periodic customer-required background and drug screenings
