Role Overview

Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services & Systems division is seeking a Senior Power Distribution Controls Engineer to join our industry-leading Power Systems Controls (PSC) group in Houston, Texas. As a full-service integrator, PSC delivers complete power systems and Microgrid control solutions, providing single-point responsibility across HMIs, PLCs, protective relays, and switchgear from all major manufacturers. In this remote role with up to 40% travel and a company-provided vehicle, you will lead complex projects designing, programming, installing, starting up, maintaining, and optimizing automated control and power management systems for critical infrastructure. Eaton’s commitment to sustainability drives our innovative solutions that enhance energy efficiency, integrate renewables, and support resilient power distribution. Your primary responsibilities include developing software for PLCs, protection relays, generator controllers, and HMIs tailored to automatic power transfer schemes like Main-Tie-Main-Gen and generator paralleling, as well as advanced Microgrid controls incorporating Solar PV, BESS, and hybrid generators. You will adhere to customer and Eaton specifications, select components, create BOMs, guide electrical designers, and prepare submittals, SOOs, and test procedures. Participation in factory testing and field startups ensures seamless deployment, while troubleshooting optimizes system performance for maximum reliability and efficiency. Key Responsibilities

  • Create, modify, test, and deploy software for PLCs, data concentrators, multi-function protection relays, generator controllers, and HMIs for automatic power transfer applications (Main-Tie-Main, Main-Gen, Main-Tie-Main-Gen, Generator Paralleling Switchgear)
  • Develop Microgrid control solutions integrating Solar Photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and Diesel/Natural gas generators
  • Follow customer specifications and internal Eaton standards for project implementation
  • Select components and create detailed bills of materials for power distribution controls
  • Provide sketches, mark-ups, and direction to Electrical Designers for project drawings
  • Prepare customer submittals, Sequence of Operation (SOO), and comprehensive test procedures
  • Assist with factory acceptance testing and field start-ups as required
  • Troubleshoot and optimize systems not functioning properly to ensure reliability
  • Collaborate with customers to deliver innovative, reliable, and efficient power management solutions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution with minimum 3 years of controls experience in power distribution applications
  • Minimum 7 years of controls experience in power distribution applications without a degree
  • Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license
  • Available for travel and mobility up to 40% of the time
  • Successfully complete and maintain compliance with Eaton’s safety program and policy, including EESS Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair automation and power management systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Knowledge of Power Monitoring and Control Systems and associated protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850)
