About the Role

As Director of Data Science & Data Engineering at eBay's Product Knowledge organization in Bengaluru, India, you'll lead a high-impact team pioneering AI-driven innovations in eCommerce product discovery. Spearhead the transformation of vast product catalogs into actionable insights using SQL, Python, LLMs, and advanced ML models to enhance search, recommendations, and generative AI experiences for millions of global buyers and sellers. Collaborate across Applied Research, Engineering, and Product teams to build scalable data pipelines, knowledge graphs, and taxonomy systems that redefine how enthusiasts shop on eBay's marketplace platform spanning 190+ markets.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and inspire a cross-functional team of data scientists, analysts, and engineers
• Conduct deep-dive SQL and Python analyses on taxonomy, ontology, and catalog structure
• Harness generative AI, prompt engineering, and LLMs for classification and data enrichment
• Build and evaluate AI/ML models including semantic embeddings and categorization systems
• Translate complex data findings into actionable insights for Product and Engineering teams
• Influence roadmap decisions on entity resolution, catalog optimization, and knowledge graphs
• Collaborate with Applied Research, Engineering, and Product teams to deploy scalable solutions
• Prototype quickly, validate hypotheses, and iterate on AI-driven product discovery solutions
• Drive innovation in eBay's search, recommendations, and generative AI experiences
• Transform product data into insights that enhance eCommerce user experience and discovery

Required Qualifications

• 12+ years of experience in data science or analytics roles
• 5+ years of experience leading data science and engineering teams
• Proven track record building data products, knowledge graphs, and scalable data pipelines
• Deep understanding of eCommerce search, recommendation systems, and product analytics
• Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders
• Experience evaluating ML models with custom metrics and robust frameworks
• Startup mindset with comfort in ambiguity, bias for action, and fast iteration

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and RAG techniques
• Expertise in taxonomy, ontology, and catalog structure for eCommerce
• Background in entity resolution and knowledge graph development
• Experience in semantic embeddings and ML-based categorization systems
• Proven success in product discovery innovations for marketplaces
