About the Role

As an MTS 1 Software Engineer (Backend) in eBay's Buyer Payments team in Bengaluru, India, you'll build and scale critical backend systems powering Checkout and Orders for one of the world's largest e-commerce marketplaces. Serving millions of buyers and sellers across 190+ markets, you'll design reliable, high-performance services using Java, GraphQL, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and Kafka to handle massive transaction volumes and ensure seamless global commerce experiences. Your work will directly enhance eBay's platform authenticity, scalability, and 24/7 availability, driving economic opportunity worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop durable, scalable backend solutions using Java, GraphQL, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and messaging frameworks for eBay's Buyer Payments team
• Take full ownership of subsystems from design through testing, deployment, observability, and monitoring
• Influence design and architecture decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance in global commerce platform
• Identify areas for improvement and design flexibility to boost engineering velocity
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver innovative features
• Promote design guided by information for testable, maintainable features ensuring quality
• Break down complex features, resolve blockers, and provide code reviews and mentorship
• Participate in release management, SRE initiatives, and on-call rotations for 24/7 availability
• Lead improvements in end-to-end testing, CI/CD processes, and development velocity
• Build backend systems supporting Checkout and Orders in eBay's online marketplace
• Enhance technical expertise and advise on high-scale distributed systems

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience developing, maintaining, and scaling backend systems in production environments
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
• Extensive experience with Java, GraphQL, Spring/Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and messaging platforms like Kafka or RabbitMQ
• Experience building data-driven applications using RDBMS, NoSQL, and ElasticSearch
• Verified skill in delivering high-quality software in fast-paced agile contexts with TDD, CI/CD, and automation
• Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems
• Strong understanding of software lifecycle management, system reliability, and observability
• Familiarity with Shift Left testing approaches and modern DevOps principles

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in e-commerce or marketplace platforms supporting high-volume transactions
• Knowledge of payment processing systems like Checkout and Orders
• Proven track record in on-call rotations and site reliability engineering for 24/7 platforms
• Background in mentoring junior engineers and leading technical discussions
