About the Role

Join eBay's innovative Cloud Security team as a Sr Software Engineer specializing in Data Obfuscation & Privacy, where you'll safeguard sensitive customer data across our global ecommerce platform connecting millions of buyers and sellers in 190+ markets. In this critical role, you'll design and implement advanced obfuscation services—including masking, tokenization, and anonymization—to protect identities, payment details, and transaction data while ensuring seamless usability for eBay's high-scale marketplace operations. Collaborating with privacy, security, and product teams, you'll balance stringent compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other regulations against the need for performant, scalable systems that drive economic opportunity worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop services that implement data obfuscation, anonymization, and masking for sensitive customer data across eBay’s ecommerce ecosystem
• Collaborate with privacy, security, and product teams to define requirements balancing compliance, usability, and performance for marketplace operations
• Integrate obfuscation frameworks into critical systems like buyer-seller transactions, ensuring minimal friction for internal teams and customers
• Conduct security and privacy assessments, identifying risks and applying mitigations to meet global privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)
• Develop APIs and SDKs that make data obfuscation solutions easy to adopt across eBay engineering teams
• Monitor and audit obfuscation services to ensure performance, accuracy, and compliance in high-volume ecommerce environments
• Support incident response teams in protecting sensitive data during production issues or investigations involving marketplace data
• Ensure privacy-first engineering supports eBay's platform serving millions of buyers and sellers in 190+ markets
• Innovate data protection solutions that enable secure economic opportunities without compromising platform scalability

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
• 5–8 years of software engineering experience, with a focus on security, data privacy, or backend services
• Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Python, or Node.js
• Expertise in data obfuscation techniques: masking, tokenization, pseudonymization, encryption
• Experience working with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra)
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized deployments (Kubernetes, Docker)
• Strong knowledge of security and privacy principles, including regulatory frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) such as differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, or secure multi-party computation
• Familiarity with data governance frameworks and compliance tooling
• Hands-on work with monitoring, auditing, and logging tools to ensure obfuscation compliance
• Strong knowledge of identity and access management (IAM)
• Experience building developer-friendly tools that accelerate adoption of privacy-preserving practices
