RESUME AND JOB
Canonical
Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu, the world's leading open-source operating system powering enterprise innovation in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering, and IoT. As a pioneer in global distributed collaboration, Canonical employs over 1200 colleagues across more than 80 countries, with very few office-based roles. Teams align on strategy through in-person meetings two to four times a year in exciting global locations. Founder-led and profitable, Canonical continues to grow, serving top public cloud providers, silicon leaders, and industry giants.
Canonical seeks an Engineering Manager for its Commercial Systems unit, comprising six collaborative engineering teams at the core of the company's business. Opportunities exist in specialized teams: Billing (Golang-based scalable billing service), Business Systems (NetSuite, Salesforce integration), Data Governance (data mesh with Trino and Ranger), and Livepatch (kernel patching for security). This home-based role in EMEA offers accountability for internal product development, high engineering standards, and driving team excellence in open-source solutions supporting Canonical's expansion.
As Engineering Manager, you will take full ownership of an internal product's design and development. Lead a team of software engineers, fostering their growth and capabilities. Continuously seek enhancements to processes, designs, and solutions. Deeply understand business needs to maximize impact, ensuring reliable, scalable services that integrate with engineering, business, and payment systems. Deliver exceptional results in domains like billing, data governance, business operations, or Livepatch security services.
We seek candidates with an exceptional academic track record from high school and university, plus an undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative path. Demonstrate a history of exceeding expectations for outstanding results. Proficiency in software development using high-level languages like Golang, Python, or Java is essential. Professional English skills with excellent presentation abilities are required, alongside a result-oriented mindset, personal drive to meet commitments, and willingness to travel internationally twice yearly for up to two-week company events.
Enjoy a fully remote, home-based role in EMEA within a remote-first culture. Collaborate with global talent on Ubuntu and open-source innovations. Benefit from Canonical's profitability and growth trajectory. Participate in inspiring offsites worldwide. Access professional development to advance your career and your team's skills. Work with cutting-edge technologies in secure, scalable systems central to enterprise open-source leadership.
At Canonical, Engineering Managers thrive by continuously developing skills and those of their reports. High accountability and engineering quality standards position you for impact in a growing company. Opportunities span billing innovation, business systems mastery, data democratization, and security reliability. Leverage Ubuntu's ecosystem to build expertise in cloud, AI, IoT, and beyond, with clear paths to leadership in open-source engineering.
Join a founder-led innovator shaping open-source futures. Ubuntu powers breakthrough initiatives for global leaders.
