Job Description 

General Motors of Canada Company– St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, is inviting applications from Engineering & Science students for one (1) Environmental Engineering 16 month internship position. 

This is an opportunity to jump-start your career by gaining valuable professional experience within a manufacturing environment.  St. Catharines Propulsion Plant proudly manufactures the Gen 5 V8 engine which are shipped to GM assembly plants worldwide. A new product retool is occurring at the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to produce the Gen 6 V8 engine that will power GM’s high demand full size trucks and SUVs. The intern will be assigned to the environmental department for the entire duration of sixteen (16) months. The intern will also have the opportunity to engage with our environmental team at the Oshawa Campus, and corporate environmental team, supporting General Motors sites across Canada.  

The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident engineering or science student with strong problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills. The candidate will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation for their area. Candidates must have a valid G driver's license for the start date of the internship. This role is 100% in person, and the successful candidate must report to the site each workday. 

The Team:

The Environmental Team consists of highly trained environmental professionals who serve as a first-line resource for our manufacturing and non-manufacturing business partners. We are proficient at implementing robust environmental and sustainability practices into daily business decisions and operations to comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations while fostering community

connections. We work collaboratively with our service suppliers, community partners, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and legal counsel staff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of plant sustainability initiatives and projects to meet GM Sustainability Commitments. 

  • Support environmental compliance and initiatives related to plant operations including wastewater discharge, storm water management, air emissions, sewer systems, chemical usage, and waste management programs. 

  • Conduct environmental compliance related inspections and coordinate follow-up activities 

  • Support the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System i.e. conduct internal audits 

  • Coordinate site-wide departmental training on environmentally relevant ISO Task Instruction Sheets

  • Support daily shipments for Reg. 347 waste under the RPRA Hazardous Waste Program and assist waste management contractors in resolving waste collection issues

  • Support zero waste to landfill activities and actively pursue alternatives for waste diversion/reduction.

  • Support wastewater and storm water programs in compliance with local by-laws and Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA).  

  • Assist in analyzing monthly environmental performance metrics (Plan Do Check Act) and implement corrective actions to ensure compliance with target objectives.

  • Develop and coordinate plant sustainability community outreach activities and environmental awareness programs, i.e. Tandem Global Wildlife Habitat Certification, GM ecoSTEM program, World Environment Day, Waste Reduction Week 

  • Pursue new opportunities to increase environmental profile in the community and within the GM network 

  • Lead and/or support various continuous improvement special projects (varies year-to-year) 

  • Support environmental engineering and facility projects as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree (3rd and 4th year students) in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainable Chemistry

  • Enrolled in a qualifying Ontario cooperative education, or internship program 

  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada, and 16-month term 

  • Past experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment is an asset

  • Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 and environmental legislation is an asset

  • Have a valid full Class G Ontario Driver’s License, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province license

  • Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed, adaptable, ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Possess strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
