Hybrid: This internship is categorized as hybrid. The selected intern is expected to report to the office up to three times per week or as determined by the team.

About the Team:  

The Local Planner Controller team formulates and solves optimization problems online, considering kinematic feasibility, collision avoidance, and ride comfort. 

About The Role:   

You will be an intern in the Local Planner Controller team within Embodied AI. We formulate and solve optimization problems online, considering kinematic feasibility, collision avoidance, and ride comfort. In this role, you will have opportunities to work on exciting problems in vehicle dynamics, estimation and controls systems used by GMs Super Cruise system.  

What You’ll Do:  

  • Support development for vehicle dynamics and controls software deployed to GMs Super Cruise system. 

  • Join technical reviews and apply software engineering best practices. 

  • Contribute to Active Safety, Driver Assistance, and Super Cruise. 

  • Improve and deliver reliable software through continuous integration, automated testing, and code reviews. 

  • Help define, build, and embody GM engineering culture and principles. 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Graduate student (PhD preferred) in controls, optimization, path planning, or related. 

  • Deep understanding of optimal controls and trajectory optimization algorithms. 

  • Good grasp of classical and modern feedback control theory and techniques. 

  • Solid understanding of vehicle dynamics. 

  • Experience with C++/Python development. 

  • Strong communication skills. 

  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact on the world. 

  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week. 

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • A background in robotics, ROS, or the AV/ADAS industry. 

  • Experience in numerical optimization algorithms. 

  • Experience designing software applications for safety critical systems. 

  • Experience building and managing engineering teams. 

  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship. 

  • Graduating between December 2026 and June 2027. 

Compensation:  

  • The monthly salary range for this role is $13,100 per month  

  • GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2026 Student Program.
