The Role
As a Manager, Software Engineering , you will lead a team of engineers responsible for building, scaling, and operating highly reliable, production-grade software systems. This role blends people leadership with strong technical depth—we expect our engineering managers to remain close to the code, architecture, and technical decision-making that shape our platforms.
While you may not code full-time, you will actively contribute through design reviews, code reviews, technical mentorship, and hands-on problem solving when needed. You will partner closely with your team to deliver high-quality software, guide architectural direction, and ensure systems are built with reliability, scalability, and maintainability in mind. This role is ideal for a leader who can set a high engineering bar, lead by example, and foster a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, setting technical direction, priorities, and execution plans aligned with broader organizational goals
Design, build, and maintain production-grade software systems and internal tooling that improve reliability, scalability, and developer productivity
Drive engineering best practices across code quality, testing, deployment, and system design
Review architecture and code to ensure systems are built with reliability patterns such as fault tolerance, graceful degradation, and scalability
Partner closely with product and engineering stakeholders to deliver high-impact features while balancing reliability, performance, and time-to-market
Support a “you build it, you run it” culture with full service ownership
Participate in and support on-call rotations as needed, helping diagnose and resolve complex production issues
Lead incident reviews and postmortems, turning learnings into concrete engineering improvements
Define and manage reliability goals using SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs
Advocate for performance improvements and architectural optimizations that reduce operational overhead
Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
8+ years of experience on software engineering teams building and operating production systems
Demonstrated experience leading engineers through technical mentorship, code reviews, and architectural decision-making
Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Go, Java)
Strong understanding of distributed systems, operating systems, networking, databases, and storage
Deep understanding of how software executes on underlying infrastructure
Experience debugging and improving complex production systems
Experience automating workflows, CI/CD pipelines, or developer tooling
Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
Familiarity with containerization and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes
Experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems
Prior experience with Java in production environments
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only and is provided in accordance with applicable state laws. Compensation may vary for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.
Base Salary Range: $160,200 – $333,400.
Actual compensation will be determined based on factors relevant to the position.
Bonus Potential: This role is eligible for an incentive pay program based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
