Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Ruby on Rails and core backend components such as ActiveRecord, Redis, and HAML (experience)

  • Practical experience with relational databases like PostgreSQL, including querying, modeling, and basic tuning (experience)
  • Habit of writing automated tests with tools like RSpec (experience)
  • Building reliable, maintainable code with strong attention to performance and scalability (experience)
  • Ability to investigate, diagnose, and prevent performance and reliability issues in production systems (experience)
  • Comfort working in an iterative, highly collaborative environment with cross-functional partners (experience)
  • Clear and concise communication skills (experience)
  • Ability to break down complex problems into small, shippable iterations (experience)
  • Openness to learning and transferable experience from related technologies or domains (experience)

  • Advanced GraphQL schema design and optimization experience (experience)
  • Performance profiling and bottleneck resolution in Rails applications (experience)
  • Experience with Redis caching strategies for high-traffic systems (experience)
  • PostgreSQL query optimization and database indexing expertise (experience)
  • Contributions to open-source Ruby or Rails projects (experience)
  • Familiarity with GitLab's product ecosystem (Wiki, Pages, Markdown) (experience)
  • Experience with blameless postmortems and incident response (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Build fast, flexible query engines for complex knowledge discovery
  • Design, implement, and evolve intuitive GraphQL APIs
  • Improve reliability and performance across Rails, PostgreSQL, and Redis
  • Write automated tests with RSpec and improve test coverage
  • Collaborate with frontend, Product, UX, and Security teams on projects
  • Review merge requests and champion code quality standards
  • Contribute to technical documentation for features and systems
  • Investigate and debug production issues
  • Participate in blameless incident reviews
  • Implement improvements to strengthen system resilience
