Role Overview
Superhuman (formerly Grammarly) seeks experienced Back-End Software Engineers for our Kyiv hybrid team. This role offers the perfect balance of focused deep work and in-person collaboration that builds trust, sparks innovation, and strengthens team culture.
Our engineering teams power Grammarly's writing assistance, Coda's collaborative workspaces, Mail's inbox management, and Go's proactive AI assistant. With integration across 1M+ applications, we're scaling rapidly to eliminate busywork for individuals, teams, and enterprises globally.
As a Back-End Engineer, you'll build core infrastructure supporting 30M+ daily active users. Start shipping code in week one and deliver customer-facing features within months. Work on high-scale production services with complex algorithms powering AI-driven productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and implement scalable back-end services handling millions of API calls daily
- Build high-availability infrastructure targeting 99.99% uptime for enterprise customers
- Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar
- Design and optimize RESTful APIs and microservices architecture
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Core, Growth, Enterprise, Trust & Safety, and Data Science teams
- Debug production issues at scale using advanced monitoring and observability tools
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical documentation standards
- Evaluate existing systems and propose future-proof architectural improvements
- Ship impactful features rapidly - from concept to production in weeks
- Ensure exceptional end-user experience through rigorous testing and monitoring
- Integrate AI/ML models into production back-end services
- Contribute to open-source projects and maintain internal engineering blog
Qualifications
Required Experience:
- 5+ years back-end development with production systems at scale
- Strong CS fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, system design)
- AWS/GCP/Azure experience with services like EC2, Lambda, RDS, ElastiCache
- Production debugging experience with distributed systems
- Deep understanding of database design (SQL/NoSQL) and query optimization
Technical Skills:
- Java, Python, Node.js, or Go proficiency
- Microservices architecture and container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes)
- CI/CD pipeline implementation (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI)
- Experience with message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS)
Soft Skills:
- Proven ability to work independently across multiple projects
- Strong collaboration and communication across engineering teams
