Role Description

As a Senior Software Engineer (Insurance) in Pittsfield, you'll engineer robust applications for Individual Disability Insurance, Multi-Life Disability Insurance, Business Insurance, and Life policies. Lead modernization efforts, including mainframe-to-cloud migrations on AWS. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, automated solutions using Procedural Java, COBOL, and modern toolsets. This full-time hybrid role requires 3 days/week in-office (Pittsfield, MA preferred; Bethlehem, PA or other locations considered).

Detailed Responsibilities

• Translate business and technical requirements into well-engineered, tested, and deployed systems for disability and life insurance administration.
• Lead mainframe modernization and rehosting initiatives, migrating workloads to AWS cloud platforms.
• Design, develop, and maintain applications using Procedural Java and modernization toolsets.
• Perform technical analysis, design, development, testing, installation, and maintenance of information systems.
• Apply disciplined software development processes and modern technologies for automated business solutions.
• Support integration between distributed systems and mainframe environments via web services and middleware.
• Conduct functional and regression testing, collaborating with QA teams.
• Drive process improvements, risk mitigation, and high-ownership deliverables in Agile environments.

Required Skills

We're seeking experts in insurance software engineering with mainframe and cloud experience:

• Mainframe modernization and AWS cloud migration
• Procedural Java and hands-on Java development
• COBOL, JCL, DB2 (RDS for DB2 LUW preferred)
• Batch processing for Disability and Life Insurance systems
• Middleware protocols (Axway, IBM MQ/SQS, SFTP, ControlM)
• Agile methodologies (Kanban, Scrum), Jira, ServiceNow, GitHub
• Insurance domain knowledge (Individual/Multi-Life Disability)
• Functional/regression testing and enterprise architecture

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
• 6+ years in systems analysis, development, and QA testing of mainframe and modernized insurance systems.
• Preferred: Experience with Life Insurance and Individual Disability products.
• Strong risk-mitigation mindset and process automation skills.

Compensation Overview

Competitive salary range: $79,310 - $130,295 annually, based on experience. Additional incentives include performance bonuses and equity opportunities.
