Handshake is seeking experienced Ophthalmologists to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional full-time clinical role. You’ll use your real-world ophthalmology experience to evaluate AI-generated content and provide feedback that helps AI better understand ophthalmic concepts, workflows, and professional medical language in general, non-patient-specific contexts.
This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment.

This role is fully remote, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere in the USA with a reliable internet connection. What is the time commitment for this role?
Many contributors work approximately 5–20 hours per week when assigned to an active project. The schedule is flexible and asynchronous, with no minimum hour requirement.

No prior AI or technical experience is required. We are looking for ophthalmology expertise.
What qualifications are required?
We’re looking for established professionals with 4+ years of post-training professional experience practicing ophthalmology, hands-on experience diagnosing and managing eye conditions, performing ophthalmic procedures, and communicating clinical information to patients or other clinicians.
Is this a full-time position?
No, this is an independent contractor position.
Where can I work from?
This is a fully remote position; work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection and access to a desktop or laptop computer.
How long does the Handshake AI program run?
The Handshake AI program runs year-round, with projects opening periodically across different areas of expertise. Placement depends on current project needs, with opportunities to be considered for future projects as they become available.
What if I am an F-1 student?
F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible for projects on Handshake AI. Work with your Designated School Official to determine your eligibility. If your school requires a CPT course, Handshake AI may not meet your school’s requirements. STEM OPT is not supported.
Will I be diagnosing or treating patients in this role?
No, this role involves evaluating AI-generated content and does not involve direct patient care.
How will I be paid?
You will be paid on an hourly basis as an independent contractor.
