Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize complex optical systems using advanced modeling tools like Zemax or Code V for space-based instruments.
  • Develop detailed optical layouts, including lens design, mirror systems, and beam control for high-precision applications.
  • Conduct performance analysis, tolerance budgeting, and stray light simulations to meet stringent space environment requirements.
  • Lead prototype fabrication, assembly, alignment, and environmental testing of optical subsystems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate optics into full instrument architectures.
  • Support verification and validation testing, including optical alignment, wavefront measurement, and radiometric calibration.
  • Document designs, analyses, and test results for compliance with aerospace standards and customer specifications.

As an Advanced Optical Engineer at Honeywell, you will play a critical role on a cross-disciplinary team that specializes in the design, development, and manufacturing of novel, state-of-the-art optical and science instruments for military, government, and commercial space applications, including Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, space situational awareness, maritime traffic monitoring, and optical communications. Your expertise and knowledge will be instrumental in developing optical systems and performing testing to ensure successful completion of projects and the delivery of high-quality solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in optical design and development for aerospace or defense applications (experience)
  • Proven track record with optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, or OpticStudio (experience)
  • Hands-on experience with optical testing, alignment, and metrology equipment (experience)
  • Familiarity with space-qualified optics, including cryogenic and vacuum environments (experience)
  • U.S. citizenship or ability to obtain security clearance due to ITAR/export control requirements (experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Optical Engineering or related discipline (experience)
  • Experience with freeform optics, diffractive elements, or adaptive optics (experience)
  • Active Secret or Top Secret security clearance (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Design and model advanced optical systems for space instruments using ray-tracing and wavefront analysis tools
  • Perform tolerance analysis, sensitivity studies, and optimization to achieve performance specifications
  • Lead the development and testing of optical prototypes, including alignment and integration
  • Analyze test data from interferometers, spectrophotometers, and environmental chambers to validate designs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure optical subsystems meet system-level requirements
  • Develop and maintain optical design documentation, including drawings and interface control documents
  • Support proposal activities by providing technical input on optical feasibility and risk assessments
