Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the full lifecycle of safety certification processes, from requirements definition through to final approval.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for regulatory audits, certification reviews, and stakeholder engagements with authorities like EASA and FAA.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of certification artifacts, including plans, standards, and compliance matrices, to mitigate risks and ensure traceability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate certification requirements into system design and development workflows.
  • Support verification and validation activities, including tool qualification and independent verification processes.
  • Provide expert guidance on certification strategies for complex airborne systems, such as avionics software and hardware.

Summary

We have an opportunity for an Airborne Systems Certification Engineer to join our team at Honeywell, in Bristol, where you will be responsible for developing and supporting on the safety certification process (e.g. DO178/254) from the requirements definition, and be the point of contact for audits and reviews of the certification process.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline (experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in airborne systems certification, with hands-on involvement in DO-178C and/or DO-254 processes (experience)
  • Proven track record as a point of contact for certification audits and regulatory reviews with authorities like EASA or FAA (experience)
  • Strong understanding of safety-critical systems development lifecycle, including requirements management and traceability (experience)
  • Experience with certification planning, compliance demonstration, and artifact generation (experience)
  • Eligibility to work in the UK with ability to obtain security clearance if required (experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field (experience)
  • Certification as a DO-178C/DO-254 practitioner or similar (e.g., from RTCA or SAE) (experience)
  • Experience with ARP4754A/4761A system safety processes or model-based development tools (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of certification plans, standards, and procedures for airborne software and hardware systems in compliance with DO-178C/DO-254
  • Act as the primary interface for external audits, certification liaison activities, and regulatory authority interactions
  • Perform detailed reviews and approvals of certification data packages, ensuring full traceability from requirements to implementation
  • Collaborate with systems, software, and hardware engineers to embed certification objectives into design and verification activities
  • Identify and resolve certification risks through gap analysis, process improvements, and tailored mitigation strategies
  • Support tool qualification, structural coverage analysis, and independent verification & validation (IV&V) efforts
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of Honeywell's certification methodologies
