Job Description

At Jabil we strive to make ANYTHING POSSIBLE and EVERYTHING BETTER. We are proud to be a trusted partner for the world's top brands, offering comprehensive engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain solutions. With over 50 years of experience across industries and a vast network of over 100 sites worldwide, Jabil combines global reach with local expertise to deliver both scalable and customized solutions. Our commitment extends beyond business success as we strive to build sustainable processes that minimize environmental impact and foster vibrant and diverse communities around the globe.

JOB SUMMARY

This role is part of Jabil's Renewable & Energy Infrastructure (R&EI) business, supporting the design and manufacturing of BESS products for global customers.

The BESS System Engineer is responsible for defining, integrating, and supporting Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions at the product and system level for manufacturing in multiple regions. This role focuses on overall system architecture, subsystem integration, and transfer of design to Jabil manufacturing sites, ensuring alignment with regional grid-interconnection and safety standards.

The engineer will ensure that the BESS design meets performance, safety, compliance, and manufacturability requirements in accordance with applicable industrial standards in different markets (e.g., UL/NFPA, IEC/IEEE), and will collaborate closely with global engineering teams, suppliers, and customers during the design and factory validation phases. The primary focus is on product and factory-level integration and testing, in close collaboration with customer technical teams as needed.

Success in this role means effectively enabling system-level design and factory implementation, while communicating clearly with global and customer teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • System Architecture and Requirements
    • Work with the System Architect and functional teams (Electrical, Mechanical, and Software) to define and refine the BESS system architecture and key subsystem interfaces.
    • Develop and maintain system-level requirements, specifications, and interface definitions across all subsystems.
  • Design Reviews, DFMEA, and Cross-functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate closely with global teams, external design partners, suppliers, and manufacturing sites to evaluate system designs and technical proposals, including participation in design reviews and DFMEA activities to ensure alignment with performance, safety, and manufacturability requirements.
  • System Analysis, Component Selection, and Documentation
    • Coordinate and review system-level design analyses (e.g., power flow, fault behavior, efficiency, operating modes, grid behavior, integration constraints) with internal function teams and external design partners.
    • Support selection and evaluation of key components (batteries, PCS, transformers, switchgear, fire suppression, thermal systems, protection devices).
    • Develop and review engineering drawings and studies, including SLDs (single-line diagrams), wiring diagrams, layouts, communication interfaces, and protection studies.
    • Prepare technical documentation, solution briefs, and system specifications for global teams and customer stakeholders.
  • Factory Validation, Compliance, and Productization
    • Plan and support factory-focused system validation (e.g., FAT), including functional testing, safety testing, and standards compliance (UL 9540/9540A, IEEE 1547, IEC standards).
    • Support design transfer and build readiness for prototype, pilot, and production builds.
    • Work with manufacturing sites to resolve integration issues and drive DFM/DFT and reliability improvements for BESS products.
  • Risk Management and Continuous Improvement
    • Identify technical risks throughout the project lifecycle and drive mitigation plans with cross-functional and cross-regional teams.
    • Maintain awareness of ESS/BESS industry trends, standards, and supplier technologies, and share relevant insights with internal teams.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Strong understanding of BESS/ESS or related power system architecture, including several of the following: battery systems, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection, fire suppression, thermal management, monitoring; EMS/SCADA familiarity is a plus but not required. Experience with utility-scale BESS projects and working with battery suppliers, inverter/PCS vendors, or other system partners is preferred.
  • Practical experience with operating modes in ESS, PV plants, UPS, or microgrids, such as grid-tied operation, backup power, peak shaving, or frequency-related functions.
  • Ability to interpret and create system-level electrical drawings and control documentation (e.g., SLDs and wiring diagrams).
  • Experience participating in or coordinating system-level testing, validation, and troubleshooting for complex electrical systems (e.g., ESS, PCS/inverter, or power systems).
  • Working knowledge of power electronics, electrical protection, fault behavior, and AC/DC system behavior.
  • Basic understanding of thermal management, reliability, fire safety, and hazard mitigation within ESS or similar applications.
  • Familiarity with grid interconnection requirements and standards (e.g., UL 9540/9540A, IEEE 1547/2030, NFPA 855, relevant IEC/UL standards). Experience coordinating with certification labs or utilities on compliance and grid-interconnection testing from a product and factory-testing perspective is preferred.

NON-TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal); able to conduct meetings, reviews, and technical discussions with global teams.
  • Comfortable working across different time zones and cultures; able to coordinate with global teams.
  • Strong presentation skills for engaging suppliers, customers, and internal senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional technical discussions and drive alignment across remote teams.
  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple tasks independently while collaborating in a global environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally and domestically as required, including periods of more frequent travel during key project phases.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy/Power Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Master’s degree in a related discipline is a plus.
  • Typically 8+ years of engineering experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Energy storage systems (ESS/BESS)
    • Renewable energy systems
    • Power systems and distribution
    • PCS/inverters, UPS, or microgrid integration
  • Demonstrated experience in system-level engineering, requirement definition, supplier engagement, or ESS/PCS/BMS/system integration.
  • Experience working with international suppliers, global teams, or multinational manufacturing environments is preferred.
