Critical Environments Operating Engineer

Position Overview

The Critical Environments Operating Engineer provides preventive maintenance and reactive support for the regional Critical Environments Program. This role primarily focuses on shift coverage and on-call operational support for all facility systems, including electrical, HVAC, and building controls, ensuring reliable and efficient operation of equipment supporting Data Centers and other Critical Facilities in the region.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Facility Operations & Maintenance

  • Perform general facility maintenance including plumbing repairs, lamp/ballast replacement, door hardware maintenance, and related tasks
  • Operate building systems safely and efficiently in accordance with government regulations and standard operating procedures
  • Execute maintenance according to company Preventative Maintenance Program guidelines
  • Conduct predictive maintenance, routine maintenance, equipment rounds, and service requests as directed
  • Inspect and repair pumps, fans, valves, and motors to ensure proper facility equipment and system operation
  • Track electrical and mechanical loads for all critical systems
  • Record readings and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper equipment operation

Critical Environment Program Support

  • Interface with Critical Operations Team to coordinate Critical Area Program activities
  • Schedule maintenance windows in Change Management system
  • Participate in staff meetings and interface with key vendors and project management personnel
  • Maintain written communications within the Critical Environment Team
  • Support vendor preventive and repair activities that cannot be performed in-house, including on-site support, proposal request development, and vendor proposal review

HVAC & Equipment Management

  • Install, maintain, repair, and operate mechanical and electrical equipment and systems
  • Maintain HVAC systems and associated equipment at optimum performance levels through cleaning, inspecting, calibrating, and parts replacement
  • Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems

Administrative & Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain adequate operating inventory of tools and supplies and develop sources for stock materials
  • Work within the account's Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • Comply with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Maintain a clean and safe workplace
  • Review monthly client service request summaries to identify and correct recurrent operational problems
  • Evaluate vendors and suppliers for quality and competitive pricing
  • Prepare and submit purchase order requests and verify delivery accuracy
  • Monitor quality and pricing of maintenance work performed by outside contractors

Additional Duties

  • Provide emergency or preventative maintenance repairs during off-hours, nights, and weekends as needed
  • Lead and assist with event setup/teardown activities including electrical, audio visual, and security coordination
  • Perform periodic checks of tool and instrument inventory
  • Complete additional job duties as requested

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Trade school degree or certificate in mechanical, electrical, or controls disciplines preferred
  • Minimum three years of plant building operating experience; data center experience preferred

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks
  • Experience with Windows-based computer systems

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and overhead work, including:

  • Walking in large, campus-like settings
  • Lifting minimum of 80 lbs
  • Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment
  • Using ladders up to 30 feet and working from heights
  • Climbing ladders with 300-lb weight limit while carrying approximately 20-lb tool bag

Critical Environments Operating Engineer

Position Overview
