Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex tax positions and prepare detailed technical memos and position papers for IRS correspondence
  • Represent the firm in meetings, conferences, and negotiations with the IRS and other tax authorities
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes impacting federal tax controversy and advise on implications for the firm
  • Develop and implement processes to mitigate tax risks and ensure compliance with evolving IRS guidelines
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to the training of the Federal Tax Controversy group
  • Prepare reports and presentations on audit status and resolutions for senior management
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors and counsel to support high-stakes controversy matters

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, or a related field required; JD or CPA certification strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in federal tax controversy, IRS audits, or tax litigation within the financial services industry
  • Proven track record of managing complex IRS examinations and appeals processes
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. federal tax laws, regulations, and IRS procedures
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret tax statutes and apply them to financial institution scenarios
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a large corporate environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's in Taxation or LLM in Taxation)
  • Prior experience at a Big Four accounting firm or major financial institution like JP Morgan Chase
  • Familiarity with tax issues specific to banking, investment management, and capital markets
  • Active membership in professional organizations such as the American Bar Association's Tax Section
