Job Description

Job Summary:

The Chair of the Department of Biomedical Science (DBS) at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) will lead the schools Biomedical Science department. They will recruit and supervise the Biomedical Science faculty; oversee Biomedical Science education; and collaborate with the Chairs of the Clinical Science and Health Systems Science departments, the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, and other senior leaders to maintain, continuously improve, and implement an integrated, innovative medical school curriculum.
 
The Biomedical Science Department facultys primary functions include teaching and, in some cases, research, admissions support, student mentorship, administration, and other leadership roles.
 
The Chair of Biomedical Science will provide overall leadership of the Department and oversee biomedical science education (including but not limited to: Anatomy, Embryology, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Histology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Physiology/Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology) at the school. The Chair will provide guidance for the Biomedical Science faculty, and work with faculty across the school to ensure refinement of biomedical science content in a case-based curriculum model, including the representation of biomedical science education in clinical phases of the curriculum.
 
The ideal candidate will be an outstanding educator and scholar, have national recognition in their field(s) of study within one of the biomedical sciences, and have a distinguished record of scholarly accomplishment commensurate at the level of associate professor or higher. The Chair will not only have strong credentials within their discipline, but also enthusiasm for being part of the leadership of this unique medical school. The Chair will articulate a vision for building sound educational programs in Biomedical Science, refining them as part of a broader medical school curriculum, and will have a history of participating in innovation in medical education. The Chair will champion the career development of their faculty and establish tailored plans for each faculty member. The Chair will play a key role in implementing the strategic plan and have an orientation to spread the successful educational practices of the school beyond its walls, and among peer institutions.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Biomedical Science faculty in their roles as educators, scholars, and key contributors to all aspects of the KPSOM mission.
  • Partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and the Office of Medical Education to continuously improve and integrate Biomedical Science into the medical school curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the departments of Clinical Science and Health Systems Science on the inclusion of appropriate Biomedical Science education in all phases of the KPSOM curriculum.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the Clinical Science and Health Systems Science departments to develop and continually improve the integrated, case-based curriculum, inclusive of integrating feedback from curricular reviews and accrediting bodies.
  • Ensure that departmental activities are consistent and supportive of the mission and adhere to all policies of the school.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Medical Education, monitor the quality of teaching and learning using standardized metrics to ensure that best practices in medical education are applied by faculty.
  • Support mentorship of student research and scholarship.
  • Lead educational innovation and promote creativity and excellence in all departmental activities.
  • Provide leadership for faculty development related to medical education, in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education.
  • Mentor faculty members in the department to advance their individual scholarship efforts and career progression in medical education and other interdisciplinary research, in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education, Office of Faculty Affairs, and the Office of Research and Scholarship.
  • Encourage and demonstrate cooperation, collaboration, inclusion, and teamwork as core values of the department.
  • Foster interprofessional and cross-organizational collaboration and respect for all disciplines and roles among faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrate leadership by example in service to the program and community.
  • Collaborate with KPSOM leadership to create and implement a culture of innovation, inclusion, well-being, and commitment to educational excellence.
  • Serve on relevant KPSOM committees and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Supervise and support a team of direct and indirect reports, providing leadership, coaching, and performance management to ensure alignment with institutional goals. Oversee all aspects of team development, including recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and professional growth. Ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures, and foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
  • May serve as the Program Director of the MD/PhD dual-degree offering jointly with the California Institute of Technology. Recruit applicants, matriculate students, and lead the structured experience in collaboration with the offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, and Research and Scholarship. Optional, pending the applicants experience and interest. If the Chair does not serve as the Program Director, then they will oversee MD/PhD program in collaboration with the Program Director.
