Job Description

Job Summary:

Under direction of Diagnostic Imaging Clinical Manager and medical direction of Chief Radiologist and indirect supervision of Chief Radiologic Technologist, monitors and assists with direction of technical operation of Radiology subsection of Diagnostic Imaging; assumes direct control of specific areas within Radiology as assigned; assists with workflow coordination and performs radiographic procedures as needed; assists with Quality Control and patient care; assumes additional leadership roles in absence of Chief Radiologic Technologist.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Monitors technical performance of technologists assigned to Radiology subsection; analyzes technical and operational problems and provides Chief Technologist with improved methods and techniques; assumes direction of specific areas within Radiology subsection (radiographic, fluoroscopic, portable, trauma and surgical area) as assigned; maintains high personal level of competency in these areas to provide constant resource for teaching and training; counsels technical staff to maintain high level of image quality as well as adherence to departmental rules, standards and protocols; monitors and oversees workflow within general radiology to insure providing high level of service to patients; responds to needs of staff and management in proactive and timely manner; acts as role-model for other radiologic staff. Performs all the duties of Radiologic Technologist I/II.

  • Monitors daily fluoroscopy schedule to assure proper patient scheduling and smooth flow. Schedules in-patient fluoroscopy in a timely fashion to meet physicians needs. Prepares floor stock medications.

  • Follows all National Patient Safety Goals.  Receives and double identifies patients using appropriate criteria prior to performing the study ordered. Ensures accuracy of information and data entry, while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. Captures required documentation in Radiology Information System (RIS.) Assists with screening patients for contraindications.

  • Assumes responsibilities for the needs of patient during procedure. Provides service-oriented communication with patient; explaining procedure; answering questions. Emphasizes a personalized, individualized, compassionate patient care atmosphere at all times.  Dismisses patients for transport and/or assists with patient transport at end of procedure.

  • Rotates and shares on call responsibilities for General Radiology service areas.

  • Orients and trains (mentors) new personnel regarding subsection technical and administrative operations as needed.

  • Accepts responsibilities of direct supervision of student technologists during their clinical assignments.

  • Pursues ongoing continuing education.

  • Attends departmental meetings and/or inservice presentations as needed or required. Reads and initials minutes of such meetings when excused absence precludes attendance.

  • In absence of Chief Radiologic Technologist, coordinates and monitors activities of technologists and students; assures proper staff levels and takes appropriate action during shortages or work overloads; receives calls from physicians, nursing and clinic stations regarding patient inquiries; responds with current information; provides assistance during patient schedule conflicts; advises receptionists as to methods of schedule revisions and assures efficient patient flow.

  • Prioritizes workflow and assigns duties with particular attention to expedites and stats.

  • Teaches, trains and orients other ancillary/support personnel in departmental protocols and procedures as well as proper operation of section imaging equipment; acts as liaison between staff and supervisor.

  • Answers phones; relays messages and provides assistance as needed to radiologists and clinicians.

  • Assists with follow-up investigations of patient and staff complaints.
