Autonomous Mission Systems Software Engineer

Build software for UUVs that navigate in the dark, think independently, and complete missions where failure is not an option.

Join Leidos to develop the Sea Dart™ UUV product line – a family of undersea autonomous systems for independent operations, operator coordination, and complex missions in denied environments. This role intersects autonomy, mission planning, and command-and-control, spanning vehicle-side and topside systems. Shape reusable frameworks that endure across programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design/implement C++ autonomy and mission-planning for minimal-intervention missions
  • Orchestrate operator intent into UUV behaviors
  • Develop resilient command-and-control for degraded links
  • Advance vehicle autonomy (planners, state machines)
  • Engineer for isolation (no GPS, unreliable comms)
  • Maintain modular interfaces across Sea Dart platforms
  • Support integration, tests, field ops
  • Influence scalable product architecture

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s (8-12 yrs) or Master’s (6-10 yrs) in CS/Software Eng
  • U.S. Secret clearance eligibility
  • Modern C++ expertise on Linux
  • Autonomy familiarity
  • Distributed/degraded systems design
  • Python proficiency
  • Linux/containers experience
  • Agile practices

  • Python for tooling/testing (experience)
  • Linux/containerized environments (Docker, VMware) (experience)
  • Agile tools (Jira, Bitbucket) (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Design/implement autonomy and mission-planning software in modern C++ for Sea Dart UUVs
  • Develop mission orchestration converting operator intent to vehicle behaviors
  • Build command-and-control for mission monitoring and adaptation under degraded comms
  • Contribute to vehicle-side autonomy frameworks (behaviors, state machines, planners)
  • Engineer software for GPS-denied, intermittent comms environments
  • Define interfaces between mission systems, autonomy, and vehicle control
  • Support integration, testing, field ops, and debugging
  • Participate in product architecture for modularity/scalability
  • Collaborate across autonomy, comms, systems, hardware teams
  • Mature Sea Dart software ecosystem and tooling
