Join Leidos at NETL: Carbon Materials Research Scientist

Leidos seeks a motivated Carbon Materials Research Scientist (recent graduate, <5 years experience, post-doc preferred) to collaborate with world-class experts at DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Pittsburgh, PA. Work onsite daily advancing carbon supply chain solutions through innovative synthesis and characterization of graphite, graphene, porous carbons, and composites for energy technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Synthesize advanced carbon materials including graphite, graphene, activated carbons, and composites.
  • Perform comprehensive characterization using electron microscopy, FTIR, Raman, TGA, UV-Vis, XRD, and more.
  • Assess electrochemical properties for batteries/supercapacitors via cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic methods, EIS.
  • Develop and scale synthesis from domestic feedstocks: coal, biomass, petroleum coke.
  • Present in team meetings, author reports/proposals, publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • Master’s in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related + 3+ years experience.
  • Proven hands-on carbon synthesis/functionalization via publications.
  • Expertise in key characterization techniques.
  • High-impact publishing and team problem-solving skills.
  • NETL access eligibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in relevant field.
  • Coal/metallurgical experience.
  • Knowledge of carbon feedstocks and reactor design.
  • Scaling expertise and applications in energy storage/composites.

  • Synthesize graphite, graphene, porous/activated carbons, and composites with polymers/metals
  • Characterize structural, optical, electronic properties using electron microscopy, FTIR, Raman, TGA, UV-Vis, XRD
  • Evaluate electrochemical performance of electrodes via CV, GCD, EIS for batteries/supercapacitors
  • Scale-up synthesis from domestic feedstocks like coal, biomass, petroleum coke
  • Contribute to team meetings, progress reports, proposals, and peer-reviewed publications
