Chief Engineer - Lead Hypersonic Innovation at Leidos
Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a Chief Engineer to drive the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed (MACH-TB) Flight Test Program from our Huntsville, AL office. Deliver high-impact solutions in hypersonic missile design, testing, and operations for Department of Defense customers. Leverage your expertise in high-speed vehicles to lead technical execution, from concept to flight test.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead missile system and testbed development for rapid, low-cost hypersonic testing
- Oversee full lifecycle: concept, prototyping, integration, and mission execution
- Drive systems/flight test/digital engineering with rigorous processes
- Manage hardware/software, production, logistics, and sustainment engineering
- Plan engineering resources and mentor high-potential staff
- Develop advanced Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis capabilities
- Interface with DoD leadership and multi-discipline teams on test strategies
Basic Qualifications
- ABET Bachelor’s in Engineering +20 years OR Master’s +15 years relevant experience
- Proven management of engineering teams, IPTs, and rigorous SE processes

- Management of multi-disciplinary engineering teams and integrated product teams (experience)
- Deep domain knowledge in high-speed vehicle and hypersonic missile systems (experience)
- Expertise in test planning, integration, and operations (experience)
- Strong understanding of missile system architectures and performance verification (experience)
- Experience interfacing with senior leadership, DoD customers, and external teams (experience)
- Proven track record in engineering process improvements and risk reduction (experience)
Responsibilities
- Lead development and execution of hypersonic missile system and testbed concepts for rapid low-cost testing
- Provide technical leadership across concept development, prototyping, integration, and flight test campaigns
- Oversee systems engineering, flight test engineering, digital engineering, hardware/software engineering
- Ensure engineering discipline, rigor, review, reporting, and focus in all solutions
- Manage engineering resources, talent planning, and staff mentoring for career growth
- Develop discriminating Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis techniques via contracts and R&D
- Interface with Sr. Leadership, program management, DoD personnel, and multi-discipline teams
- Guide test and evaluation strategies using models, simulations, tests, and demonstrations
- Present test plans and artifacts in formal design reviews and serve as customer liaison
