Distribution Designer Opportunity at Leidos in Framingham, MA

Leidos is seeking a talented Distribution Designer to join our team in the Framingham, MA area, focusing on electric distribution system projects in overhead (OH), underground (UG), and underground residential distribution (URD) environments. This role involves developing comprehensive construction work packages using advanced software like GIS, CAD tools, Work Management Systems (WMS), and client-specific platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV to 138kV, including overloaded transformers, joint use make ready, street lights, and inspection/maintenance projects.
  • Conduct field inspections for pole locations, documenting existing conditions with reimbursable mileage.
  • Perform critical engineering calculations: structural pole analysis, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and protective device coordination.
  • Manage additional tasks like forestry trimming requests, permit/Right-of-Way facilitation, BOM development, cost estimation, and customer interactions for easements or CIAC.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control, safety standards, project scope, schedule, and budget.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field with less than 2 years relevant experience.
  • Utility design background, field work availability (50% time), Pole Loading software/SAP familiarity.
  • Strong communication skills and knowledge of distribution projects like switchgear, voltage conversion, automation, and urban cable/conduit designs.
  • Plus: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, PLS-CADD, MicroStation, GIS.

  • Knowledge of civil & electrical packages for complex cable/conduit in dense urban environments (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems (4kV through 138kV)
  • Perform engineering calculations including structural pole analysis, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and protective device coordination
  • Field pole locations and take detailed notes on existing conditions using provided equipment
  • Comply with quality control, safe work practices, and maintain project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Prepare forestry trimming requests, facilitate permits and Right-of-Way acquisition, develop BOMs, estimate costs, and handle customer advocacy including easements and CIAC calculations
  • Utilize GIS, CAD tools, WMS, and other client systems for joint use make ready and street light projects
