Distribution Engineer at Leidos

Join Leidos' Power Delivery Services Team, ranked among ENR's Top 10 T&D and Power Firms, delivering reliable solutions to over 50 investor-owned utilities, 160+ municipals/cooperatives, and leading construction partners. We're seeking passionate Distribution Engineers in Traverse City, MI, to design exceptional electric utility projects while growing your career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design engineering for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using tools like DDS, GDT, GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, Maximo, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, and Spida-Calc.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and client priorities with scope analysis and continuous workflow improvements.
  • Review designs with clients, coordinate utilities, handle complex urban cable/conduit projects, permits, easements, and ROW.
  • Perform field data collection, site visits, planning, and customer follow-up in office and field settings.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years in electric utility design engineering.
  • B.S. in Engineering (ABET-accredited) or equivalent experience.
  • NESC proficiency; knowledge of structural analysis, guying/cable calcs, protective coordination, demand/fault currents.
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred Proficiencies

  • Cost estimation, BOM, CIAC calculations; MicroStation; work management/job estimating software; CAD.

Location & Travel

Remote-capable but must be commutable to Michigan support areas for in-person meetings and utility support across the territory.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from ABET accredited institution or equivalent experience (experience)
  • 2+ years relevant experience in electric utility design engineering (experience)
  • Proficiency with NESC (experience)
  • Knowledge of structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, protective device coordination, electric demand and fault currents (experience)
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills (experience)
  • Experience with electric utility or consulting firm (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Perform design engineering for electric utility customers
  • Develop work packages for OH, UG, URD, Make Ready, and Street Light projects using GIS/WMS systems (DDS, GDT, GE Smallworld, Bentley Expert Designer, Maximo)
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget of assigned work
  • Review engineering design packages with clients
  • Perform scope analysis, planning, customer follow-up, and maintain schedule adherence
  • Initiate continuous improvement to workflow processes
  • Coordinate conflicting utilities, develop complex design packages for urban environments, handle permits, easements, and ROW applications
  • Conduct field data collection and customer-site visits
