Extractive Metallurgist Opportunity at Leidos - NETL Albany, OR

Leidos is seeking a skilled Extractive Metallurgist to join our Research Support Services (RSS) contract at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Albany, OR. Support cutting-edge R&D for sustainable domestic supply chains of critical minerals including rare earth elements (REEs), gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge), and graphite from primary and secondary feedstocks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and optimize hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes for efficient mineral recovery.
  • Execute bench- and pilot-scale demonstrations in the Feedstock Beneficiation laboratory.
  • Perform detailed feedstock characterization using advanced mineralogical, chemical, and physical methods.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated process flowsheets and techno-economic models.
  • Document findings in reports, peer-reviewed publications, patents, and presentations at conferences.
  • Lead safety protocols, mentor staff, and provide project updates to management.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in extractive metallurgy or mineral processing.
