Job Description

Join Leidos' Saxton Lab Team as Lead R&D Engineering Technician

Leidos seeks an innovative, hands-on problem-solver for our FHWA Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL) in McLean, VA. STOL advances connected and automated vehicle technologies (V2V, V2I) and digital roadway infrastructure to enhance transportation safety, mobility, and sustainability. Work full-time on-site in a collaborative environment blending engineering, data, and policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lab Leadership: Act as technical authority for operations, resolve cross-disciplinary issues using systems-engineering.
  • Systems Management: Oversee Smart Garage, Infrastructure Testbed, vehicle fleet; diagnose power, sensors, communications, networks.
  • Integration & Fabrication: Design/install solutions integrating hardware, sensors, computing; support scripting/diagnostics.
  • Safety & Compliance: Manage training, facilities logistics, risk mitigations.
  • Stakeholder Support: Lead demos, tours, high-visibility events; interface with clients, vendors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in EE, CompE, ME or related + 5+ years hands-on R&D/automotive experience; OR Associate’s + 8+ years.
  • Hands-on mechanical/electrical/integrated systems expertise.
  • US work authorization; Public Trust eligible (3/5 years US residency).

  • OR Vocational associate’s degree with 8+ years equivalent hands-on technical experience demonstrating leadership (experience)
  • Legally authorized to work in the US with proof of status and eligible for Public Trust Clearance (3 consecutive years in US within last 5 years) (experience)
  • Experience with integrated systems in complex lab or field environments (experience)

Responsibilities

  • Lead lab operations, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and apply systems-engineering to integrate hardware, software, and operations
  • Manage Smart Garage, Infrastructure Testbed, vehicle fleet, and research equipment including diagnostics for power, communications, sensors, and networks
  • Design, fabricate, install, and integrate electrical components, computing hardware, sensors, and test instrumentation
  • Coordinate safety training, compliance, facilities management, and operational risk mitigations
  • Lead technical preparation, execution of demos, tours, testing events, and interface with stakeholders during high-pressure scenarios
